I never have any clue as to the AUS coins I buy, so I check dealer prices. Lacking a proper catalogue, here's a site I use for a ballpark value.

Most of my Australian coins come from my friends and fellow collectors in Australia.
My 1955 large penny is an exception. I picked it up a couple of years ago at a little shop. It's VF, and it cost me $2.

In Maccas 15th edition a VF 1955 no dot is $2 and with a dot after the Y is $2.50 AUD.

If it is the type with a dot after the Y of penny reverse, check out the obverse(queens head side). If the I in Elizabeth and the I in Gratia are aligned with the gap between 2 rim beads/ denticles(the little strokes around the inner rim) it would be of great interest. Some call this type a mule, but whether intended strike or not, it is very rare. There are also other varieties being wide 5's in the date(common) and close 5's in the date(less common). Here is a picture of what I mean. Top left is common no Dot after Y, Top right is common evenly spaced 5's in date on a dot after Y of penny type, Bottom left is the less common close 5's in the date on the dot after Y of penny type, and bottom right is the rare obverse mule alignment on the dot after Y of penny types.

Thanks, for all the info, the only thing I can see that this coin has is the dot after the "Y" and the I in Regina almost is in between, other than that every thing else I guess is pretty common. Thanks again for all your input. SHAFTA9a

The I in Regina should also be in line with a denticle. Can you see the alignment of the I in Elizabeth and Gratia, or are they obscured by poor strike? Is it possible you could post a picture?

The other Australians who've posted in this thread have been very tolerant and understanding about this, but I cannot let it rest unchallenged. Maybe I'm just too pedantic. quote: I just picked up a Australian Large cent 1955...
No, you did not. Australia didn't make any "large cents". Australia made "pennies" (which are large, and say "PENNY" on them) and "cents" (which are small, and don't specify the name of the unit). The penny was a predecimal unit of currency, 1/240th of a pound. There was no such thing as an "Australian cent" until 1966, when we converted from pounds, shillings and pence to dollars and cents. When that happened, the old penny had an exchangable face value of 1/120th of a dollar, or 5/6ths of a cent.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Geez... Sap sorry for calling it a "cent"
To answer farnbycoins question, the I in Elizabeth is in line with a denticle, but the I in Regina is a bit off. Sorry, can't post a pic, as of yet.

Sap, your correct in being pedantic about the "large cents". I'll be extra pedantic and correct a tiny mistake you made in stating we had no cents until 1966. We actually had cents before 1966 (1964 IIRC was when they started minting them) but they were of course dated 1966 and minted and stored in huge numbers ready for release in 1966. On another post in this forum someone mentioned 1964 as the date for the last of the pre decimals. Correctly speaking they minted 1965 pennies in Melbourne (around May-June 1965) but they intentionally decided not to date them 1965 but 1964 so as not to have them horded by collectors (they were minted because so many pennies had been horded that there was a shortage).
