I'm having a little bit of trouble. I have a 1984 half dollar and I can't figure out the mint mark. I keep seeing it as S but that can't be. I keep trying to get a good photo of it to see if anyone else can see it different but this is the best picture I could get. Can anyone help with this mint mark?

A good rule of thumb is that if you can't tell it's a Philly.

The shadow is wrong for me to tell for sure but P is a good guess.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

where I have trouble is that there is clearly a mark on the front and back of the letter that goes in that looks like a worn down s. Also when did they start putting the P on the half dollars?

It looks to me like it is a phillie mint, If it were a S it would be a proof and it doesn't look proof quality to me. And to answer your questian not 100% sure don't have my coin in front of me but I beleave 1980 is when they stated putting the P one the front, before that they were left off.

She could be right. Stranger things have happened. I couldn't tell from your pics as they were just a little dark. The best thing to invest in is a loupe. I bought mine for a little under $10. It has a little light at the end of it and I couldn't do without it. If it is hard to tell, it could be a filled in mint mark also which would make it harder to determine without some kind of magnification.

What does the loupe do?

I copied it and put it in my photo editor. It is kind of blurry but I got it large enough to where I am pretty sure it is a P. A magnifying glass or loupe on your end would be better in determining that though.

I believe you have an impaired proof.

The MM looks like an S. Also, if I'm not mistaken, proof coins have a rims that are more squared than MS strikes.

The MM clearly appears to be an "S" to me, possibly a filled "S".

Many folks do indeed pop Proof coins out of the holders and either sell them to dealers or spend them. These folks generally are not coin collectors per se and do not know the value of a Proof coin or even what a Proof coin is. This will happen with an inherited collection, stolen coins, etc.

A "Loupe" aka a "Jewelers Loupe" will give you a much closer view and will help identify many more details. I use a 10X. These can be purchased on the internet or through any local dealer.

Again though, I believe your coin has an "S" MM.

if it is a filled S, would it of been worth more had they not opened up the proof set?
