So while checking out the US mint website today (it's actually the first time I've ever done so) I saw that they will sell 250.00-1,000.00 demoninations of 1.00 coins and foot the bill for shipping with the intention that you will put these straight into circulation.

I am considering buying 250.00 worth and using them around town. My question is this: Has anyone that has done this gotten anything really cool? Are there sacagaweas in there? Ikes? Or is it mainly stuff minted in the past couple years? I would be ecstatic to find 10 dollars out of the bundle I could put in a binder while circulating the rest.

no Ikes -- It's presidential coins and Sacs. Some folks pick these up to search for errors. The goal of the program is to get them in circulation, so as long as you're not dumping them at the bank after you search, you are well within the intent of the program.

Hopefully some people who have done it will chime in soon...

We get NO dollar coins in circulation around these here parts (Fort Carson Colorado) so I think I'll give it a shot. It appears to have zero downside and I'll be doing what they intend. I know when I worked in the restaurant business many moons ago we absolutely hated dollar and half dollar coins. Even though they don't resemble quarters in any way shape or form our cashiers would mix them with quarters and give them out as change ALL the time. Until the US Mint outright abolishes the 1.00 bill I just don't see 1.00 coins ever really becoming a part of every day circulation.

no one would carry 50 $1 coins in their pocket. how many people carry 50 $1 bills in their pocket? very few, if any at all. most carry 1 to 6 $1 bills. now, replace those bills with dollar coins. 1 to 6 coins, that's it. how heavy? not heavy at all. take the time to think about it logically. how many $1 bills do you have in your wallet/pocket right now?
Rest in Peace

Every time I do this, one guy at a local store can't seem to handle it. It's like the coins are fake or I'm trying to slip something in that's not a US Dollar. He first counts them, then he sets them on the counter, looks at BOTH sides on each coin buy picking them up and not just looking, but studying them and then counts them again. Trust me, he's not too fast at counting coins. By the time I pay for $25 worth of stuff, his is always the longest line or he's calling for help from the back. I know he hates to see me come in because I always have $50-$75 in coins. I also like to mix them up and throw in a few Half Dollars too.

If you ever hear about someone being shot for using Presidential dollars, it'll be me. He has to be getting near his breaking point.

My wife also gets into it on vacation. We get $250 and use them all around Disney. I've been told, "We can only take US coins." and It's always fun to point out that they are. The first month that the SBAs came out, I got all I could find and did the same thing. I'm sure that some of the people I gave them to still have them, as I saw them swap out the SBA for a paper Dollar they had.

Jefferson, Madison and the Native American dollar are presently available in bulk.

Also....a poster above said he would "normally" carry $50-75 in coins for a purchase.......really?

I can see why the store owner wince when he sees you walk in. It's like paying for a $75 item with 75 $1 bills that you "normally" keep in your overstuffed wallet...

I normally carry 5 or 6 $1 bills and the $1 coins would be about the same in number. Great for the small purchases....not great for paying for a meal for two in a restaurant.

Rest in Peace

Your example is exactly the wrong was to try to get them circulated.

You wouldn't pay with $25 in dollar bills, paying with that many coins will likely get them wrapped and returned to the bank.

Use them a few at a time. A burger and drink, a newspaper, candy bar, a beer, etc.

They have, the US Mint will never produce another one dollar bill. Of course on the other hand they've never made a one dollar bill.

I find I keep a few $20, 10, 5's in my wallet, and the $1's folded in my pocket, and you're right, it's like 3 to 6 bills. I now notice if I'm going to the matinee, I see if I have 8 $1's for admission, or some combination for popcorn and soda (and Sno-caps!), where I end up with only a few $1's; I didn't realize I was doing that until I thought about it.
The only time I EVER come across a $1 coin is change from some machine, usually a parking garage, and I give them to my son. I have had difficulty spending those, it seems there is no slot in the cash register for them and cashiers don't know what they are, or what to do with them.
I really don't use much of any change, used to be quarters in the parking meters, but those are changing around here to take credit/debit cards.
Money appears to be gradually going out of style...

I drop i'll spend up to $4 in $1 coins in a purchase but no more. Most of the people I talk to at stores say they just use the $1 coins at the banks when they go buy change for the stores. So if they have $20 in Presidential dollars they get 2 rolls of quarters with it.
When I worked at the gas station I would bring in $20 a shift in half dollars and I would give them out in change. People would always look at them funny.
I'm amazed at how people treat anything that is not a bill. I know so many people the throw pennies on the ground when they leave the store, they don't even leave it on the counter for other people.
