What do you think is a better looking coin? US cent vs Canadian cent US nickel vs Canadian nickel US Dime vs Canadian dime US Quarter vs Canadian quarter etc, etc How do they match up in your book? My opinion, only because I'm from the Boston area and really biased...all US coins and the Bruins all the way!! lol

Just my opinion; but, I think the modern Canadian reverse designs beat out the American designs; the beaver looks better than Montecello; the maple leaves look better than the shield. I think the older US coins are nicer than the Canadian. The Mercury dime, Buffalo nickel, and Standing Liberty quarter designs are superior. It's hard for me to compare the obverse portraits. I guess the younger queen looks prettier than the presidents but the older queen...

I'm tired of political subjects on coins, so Canada's (and Australia's) animal subjects win out.

I personally like the post 1921 Canada nickels better than Jefferson and Monticello - especially the war year pieces. The beaver on the reverse is just too great looking also. But I think the Buffalo nickels might edge out in front on all of these. However, I like the Canada nickel set better overall b/c the variety of metals, shapes, and the incredible WWII designs. I do not like the newest effigy of the queen and think it takes away from the beauty of all the Canadian coins. I have always liked the Maple Leaf on the cents, but I do like wheat ears and the new shield better. I never have liked the reverse of the Canada dime very much at all. Mercury beat it by far - Obv and Rev; Roosevelt Rev is better than the schooner. As for the quarters, the caribou is great, but what I dislike about the design is it seems the design just wears off too quickly/easily. I liked Washington and the eagle. I liked a few of the State Quarter reverses. So Standing Liberty quarters I like better than the old Canada design, and Washington with the eagle I definitely like better. I do not care for all of the "commemorating the historic day Paul Bunyan burped" type coins. Too many commemoratives seems, to me, to belittle true, historic commemoratives like the Bicentennial coinage of the US in 1976 or the special 1967 coinage of Canada (can't beat that set of coins for design!). You did not mention half dollars. I like the shield on the Rev of Canada 50 cent pieces for its regal look. I like it better than the Liberty Bell on the Franklin Rev - but not the Rev of the Walker. Silver dollars, I think the two indians in the canoe is a killer design, but not sure whether I like the Morgan and Peace Rev s better or not.

I agree with ichirensha, the modern Canadian coins are more attractive than their US counterparts, but there's nothing in the older Canadian coins as attractive as a Buffalo nickel,or a Standing Liberty quarter. To me the best design of all coins US or Canadian is the voyageur dollar Go Canucks

For the cent... US wins obverse and Canada wins reverse. For the nickel... I prefer the original Jefferson image, so Canada wins the obverse. The reverse is a tie. I like both. For the dime... Do I have to choose an obverse? The reverse should be a tie, but if I had to choose, I give Canada the edge. For the quarter... Washington is the man, so US wins the obverse. With all of the crazy commemorative issues on both sides of the border, the reverse is a wash. However, the eagle will always be special to me; so US wins the tiebreaker. As for the Stanley Cup, I am sad that it is leaving Chicago. My beloved Blackhawks were eliminated by the Canucks this year. That being said, I always feel better if the team that knocked my team out goes all the way. So, go Canucks! End the drought!

I would also agree with ichirensha, modern Canadian coins are way more attractive than U.S. versions. The only Canadian example I have is a 1985 proof set, not worth a lot, but they are really beautiful coins

As far as cents go I gotta give the overall win to the Canada George V.
5 cent. I too like the older Jeff.
10 and 25 are kinda a wash (no pun intended) to me.
50 cent hands down US.

I once went to the fights and a hockey game broke out...go Bruins. I gotta go with the US penny, Canuck nickel and dime, and US quarter. The US quarter only becasue they're showing a little initiative and changing up the design. Now if we could only get rid of Dead Prezes for a while. But, every coin has it's problem with being the "Coin of the Realm".

I agree with the dead presidents commint. It would be neat if coins went back to images depicting liberty. However, when I stop to think about it, I cannot imagine how any coin could be comparable to the St.Gaudens or Walking Liberty, or even the Standing Liberty. But now I am off topic.
My vote is easy, I love the new Canadian coins, except any obverse of an old Queen. I once lined up a row of obverses and displayed them to a coworker. Old dates to new dates. You can watch her age.

I'm a huge fan of Canadian nickels, especially the George V (1922-36) series. Felix Schlag's original Monticello is way more attractive than the one-dimensional final version.

So I love Canadian dimes, but I love the American dollars past and present. The new Native American dollars are beautiful and tell a story. There is something to there feel that I just love. So I also watched a fight and a hockey game broke out, but I believe. Go canucks Go!

Cent: tie (Lincoln obverse with maple leaf reverse would be ideal -- though strange) Nickel: Canada (Jefferson looks like a maniac burnt-out rock musician) Dime: US (Roosevelt looks distinguished while the Bluenose is in such low relief) Quarter: US (The ATB series is much better than I had anticipated) Half dollar: tie Golden dollar: US (but we're getting a new design here -- let's wait and see!) 2 dollar coin: Canada (by acclamation!) I score it 3-2 for US coins (and I'm Canadian). As much as I adore the Queen, I like that you guys have 2 sides to play with, and we have only 1. PS: If we're talking older coins, I like almost ALL of them better than today's coins. Your Buffalo nickels, wheat cents, and Walker halves (and all classics) are outstanding. (Not so for Franklin halves, Liberty nickels, or SLQ IMO). Our Canadian designs were beautiful, but somewhat too repetitious across the denominations; ie. our pre-1937 reverses look extremely similar (though very nice).

As a neutral observer: (though possibly biased towards Canada, being the land of my birth) 1 cent: Canada. 5 cents: Canada. 10 cents/dime: USA. 25 cents/quarter: USA. 50 cents/half: being a heraldry nut I think they're both great, but I'd have to lead towards Canada. 1 dollar: USA, the original Sacagawea type. The Canadian 25c and 10c designs looked better back in the high-relief silver days. On flat nickel or steel they lose all their appeal. Quote: half, I don't know, I have never seen a canadian half They're no longer made for circulation, but they used to look like this.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
