I have no pictures of this but were told there were only 1 in circulation.The 249 other ones are being held by Monaco.
Anyone know much about this coin?

This might be proof. Monaco likes to put their proof coins in plastic bags.
The 1974 series minted 250 piefort with 125 ceded for public distribution.

37th edition of Krause (2009)gives mintage as 250, value $500.
Even allowing for gold price hike,

Well, the Schön (39th ed. 2011) says mintage 250 and value €2,000.

This reinforces my belief that Krause is often out of touch on non US prices.

The prices are from 2009, we are in 2011 and gold price skyrocketed since then ... That's part of the explanation :)
I collect spanish coins, and gold ones are often under priced in catalogs.
