For the tough full step dates in the 60s is it worth saving partial step nickels? I assume value for FS is generally full or not full with no in between but is that different for the tougher dates?

I think for the tougher dates it would carry a very nice premium. Unfortunately, I do not feel the 1963-D ins a tougher date. With over 200,000,000 minted they are not very scarce. I would say they would be scarce with full steps, but then comes the issue of condition. Numismedia shows a price of $45 for a MS66 and drops drastically from there. I think, in order for full steps to carry a nice premium, the rest of the coin would need to be equally nice.

My nickel book estimates full step on this year and mint mark as 1 in 3000.
With the high mintage of 272 million there could be some out there, to be found.

The book states that a small hoard of 62 D, 63 D and 64 D's were found in late 2003.

You ask if you should keep partial Step coins like this one. I think there are other factors.
- are you putting a set together and is this the best one you have (keep)
- are you looking for coins that may have a good value (high price) (maybe not this one)

To me, for Jefferson nickels it is not only full step. You also want a well struck coin.
There are other features, besides the steps that make it a nice coin. For example one with few
hits and good luster. If I was putting a BU set together I would pass on this coin.
If I was trying to put a set together from roll searching, I could see keeping this one.

The hit on Jeffersons eyebrow area and his coat and Monticello pillar, would stop me from wanting it.
Hits in main focal areas are a negative.

I am saying to be helpful, not to run your coin down. And I know pictures (at least my pictures)
really show the negative more than the postive features of a coin. This coin may look a lot better in hand
Rest in Peace

I understood that full steps meant, besides the steps being there, that there were no marks or dings present on the steps.

You are wise to consider step detail in this series and I applaud your question.

The direct answer IMHO is that partial step coins such as your 1963-D are not today valuable ... but I personally save all of my roll found pre-1987 AU+ Jefferson with step detail.

The Jefferson aficionado will state that FS is a yes/no question ... either they are full or they are not.

I agree with the technical description ... but feel there is room in my roll-found set to save at 5 cents each those (pre-1987) that fall a bit short .... such as yours.

I keep all partial step coins from 86 and earlier. Partial step coins bring a premium on ebay and they are very hard to find in circulation.

Someone had posted a link to the four quarter step count explanation (http://varietynickels.com/pages/jef...l-steps.php) which had started me wondering in the first place, so thanks for the thoughts on the matter.

..also, two of you mention 1987 as a cut off is that a common point at which more FS nickels are found or 'coin'cidence <-sorry couldn't help it.
