I am one of a group of heirs who have inherited (from a relative in Switzerland)a group of mostly Swiss Schutzenfest medals. There are about 20 pieces in all covering 1844 to 1914, some in original cases. Since there are no collectors in our group, we want to liquidate the collection and would like some advice on how best to do that.
Should we plan to have the better ones graded, should we work with an auction house, is there a better market to tap in Switzerland? What else should we know/do. Since none of us are collectors, we can't comment authoritatively on condition but I would say some look slightly circulated and some in cases look very nice.
I'd appreciate your advice.
Thanks,
Carl

...to the forum..Very nice medals. As a guide line you can go on ebay and see what these are selling for, this will give you an indication of a ball park value or maybe a local dealer can be of some help. Rarity and condition determines value.

The 1879 5 Fr with all the shields and the guy with the sword is a beauty..

Determining the value is the first thing you need to do. As a rule of thumb do not handle the coins with your bare hands unless you are holding the edges. Also under no circumstances should you Ever clean them if any appear to be dirty or dark. That will decrease the value a Lot.

Our founders offer a Consignment option that could be an option for you. I have personally used them and recommend them over anyone else.

ebay is an option but for rarer medals it can be iffy for what you might get if you are selling them youself.

Feel free to post a picture of the back and front of each coin. We can at least give you an estimated value as well as tell you a little history on some of them.

Welcome

Actually we'd prefer the questions stay on the forum so that everyone can benefit from shared knowledge.

I appreciate all the advice on this subject. I have decided to use Heritage Auctions for this liquidation. These items are now in their world coin auction that just opened (HA.com).
Thanks,
Carl

if you live in the NYC area go to the International coin show held every January(first week) at the waldorf astoria hotel...there are specialists there
who will give you a free appraisal and offer cash for your medals!
