now with that context, I would just try to wash it off with water with no scrubbing. Just let water alone try to remove the dirt. Then pat dry

Actually, good 'ole soap 'n water, then rinse, pat dry, works a treat on gold coins.

2. Cleaning with what?
3. Grade of coins to be cleaned?
4. Type of dirt on the coin?
5. Quantity of dirt on the coin?
6. What is being drunk during the cleaning?

I agree. You may go further, but usually one should not go past water without knowing the risks.

BadThad always recommends the solvent polarity ladder...

1) distilled water
2) acetone
3) xylene
