I'd been wanting some Walking Liberty half dollars for a while now. I have a couple of these but wanted a larger quantity. I really like the design on the obverse, being the same as that on an ASE but in a slightly smaller size. The perched eagle with folded wings on the reverse is very nice too.

I like coins that are in real nice condition, so tend to buy AUs and BUs most of the time. These are not usually available in the older coins or if they are, they cost a small fortune. APMEX carries these in XF condition, which is quite nice too, but only from time to time. Most of the time, these are out of stock. I set up a notification so that when some came in, they would send me an email.

The 1st notification came while we were traveling on vacation, so I missed out on that batch. In a few hours, they were all gone, so it doesn't take long for these to disappear.

The 2nd batch did not notify me but I happened to be browsing their web site and spotted them on my own. They had 4 rolls in stock at a good price, so I ordered 2 of them.

A few hours later, I get an email from APMEX saying that they had these in stock but at a higher price than which I had just ordered them. Hmmm... what's up with that?

So, I go back to their web site, check my order, and the price is still the same as it was earlier. No change there, so all is good.

This shipment got to me in record time, so maybe APMEX now realizes that I am not John Dillinger or Clyde Barrow and they really can ship orders to me with assurance that they will be paid quickly and in full. I'm sure that this is not what they are thinking, but it can seem that way when an order is delayed for them to verify the check. I'm not really sure why this is necessary since all of my orders are secured by my platinum VISA card. Oh, well. I'm sure that they have had their share of problems with bad checks in the past and have developed their system to minimize that problem.

It would be pretty cool if they would start a Platinum, Gold, and Silver club for their clients who have excellent records of purchasing frequently and paying promptly. They could make special offers to these folks, ship immediately, give extra entries into their coin give-aways, etc. Not a bad idea but will they come up with it on their own? We'll see, I suppose.

Anyway, the coins arrive at my place and I open them with trepidation. Inside the box were 2 20-coin plastic tubes of some of the most gorgeous half dollars I have ever seen. They may be graded as XF but they look awfully close to AU to me:

My silver itch has been scratched for another couple of weeks. My small but growing hoard is now up to just over 74 ounces. I really like these coins and plan to buy more over the summer. Supposedly, summer is the slow time of the year for silver coins, with lower prices than at other times of the year. I don't know that this is true but have read that it is. Will have to see over the next 6-8 weeks if that really is the case. I hope that it is and that I can buy more nice looking bullion coins at good prices.

I agree with you about the design. I have always thought they were the prettiest US coins ever minted. It is much prettier than the US gold eagle design!

Ed_B, now that you have some great examples of the Walking Liberty halves you may even want to get an album put together.

You dirty dawg, what a score, Liberty halves everywhere, well done!

Seventy four oz., son of a gun, your killin me!

I will never keep pace with the old Visa platinum card, 13 oz. down, gonna have to go back to the drawing board....

The hare was taking a nap under the tree (that is me in the metaphor as I have been side tracked buying gold coins lately) while the wise turtle cruses on by whistling a tune, he he he lol....

Most are in the early to mid-1940s with a few in the mid-30s. APMEX chooses the dates, so it is unlikely that any of them are particularly valuable. That's OK with me, though. I'm not a date collector, just a bullion guy... and these fill that bill quite nicely.

Gotta love buying silver at spot or even below, if you're really lucky. The ones that I got are above spot... darn it... but I forgive them for that because they look so nice!

I can see where that would be pretty cool to have but for now, I just want to build my hoard. Would like to start working on some gold as well but... KA-CHING! :-/

The design is pretty darned cool, for sure. I really like these. I also have some proof Kennedy halves that are pretty cool looking but the Walking Liberty design is my very favorite. Not that I would not trade these for a gold eagle!

Thanks, Mkman. These are pretty nice and a great addition to my collection. I would like to get some more of these but they don't have them in stock very often. Anyone else wanting some of these has to stay sharp and check the APMEX web site daily in order to spot them before they are gone. The email notification thing works pretty well but they can still disappear before you can order sometimes.
