I realize that buying coins on ebay is a gamble unless you know the seller or the coin descriptions and pictures are of very good quality. I've learned the hard way. Yesterday, I went to a local coin shop and ask for two Silver Eagles. Last night while looking at the coins I noticed the date on one was hard to read with the naked eye. Looking closer with a loupe the area around the date is scratched so bad it looks like it has been hung in a vending machine(no kidding)! I'm pretty disappointed and contemplating taking it back to see if they'll trade. Is this appropriate? I know if I order a coin from the mint or anywhere else there's no guarantee of getting a perfect coin, but I would assume that I should get one in decent shape.

Wait, I don't get it. Mint coin condition? But how can you get awful coins from a local coin shop if you did ask for mint conditions? I'm rather suprised.

But what do you mean of getting a perfect coin? A perfect coin of MS70? That's quite unrealistic even though you order them from the mint.

You should have every expectation, when buying from a dealer, that the coin (especially an ASE) will be in undamaged condition. Assuming the coin is in original packaging, the dealer had better be perfectly willing to take that coin back in exchange for a good one. If it's raw, not in sealed packaging, he'd have reason to argue that you were the one who damaged it.

Can you post a photo of the damaged area?
Might be a planchet problem or something else?

A lot of people don't care about condition on these. If you explain the situation there's a good chance they'll just trade another for it. It depends on the situation but it can't hurt to ask.

Thanks for the replies. It's not a planchet problem. I guess for people buying for bullion value it would'nt be a problem. I'm going to keep it and try to pay more attention next time.
