Going through some mint sets that I received recently and found 2 ea. 1968 10 coin mint sets. However they are in a yellowish brown envelope and not the usual white one and also are not marked at all (envelopes). The cellos are not striped with the usual red/blue lines. There is a yellowish round paper/cardboard marker showing the dates etc. in one cello square also instead of the usual plastic ones. What's up with these ? All of the coins are there and cello sealed and it is an unc. mint set and not a proof set. Next: U.S. mint set (12 coins) Quarters, halfs and ikes are the bicent. 1976 but all the other coins are 1975. There is no envelope with it just the normal cellos. Is this the normal 1976 mint set ? I swear I saw the same bicent sets on ebay but the other coins (cent, nickel, dimes) were 1976 and not 1975 ? Thanks for any help on either.

1) the only yellow envelope/clear cello with cardboard insert that I'm aware of was 1963. Are you sure your eyes aren't playing tricks on you and the 68 is really a 63?
2)What you have is a normal 1975 mint set. The Mint set for 1976, has '76 dates cent, dime nickel. We often forget that the bicentenial quarters, halves and dollars ran for 2 years ..so they appear in both the 75 and 76 sets.

I am at a loss on the 1968 set Can you show a picture? For the other one, that is a normal 1975 Mint Set- remember that the Bicentennial coins were two years issues.

Hi
No, all are 1968. Has the 40% kenn. half. The yellow brown round inserts in the cello also state 1968. Just weird as usually there are those plastic buttons and not cardboard/paper ones. As well as the color of the envelope and the no striped clear cellos.
O.K. now on the 1975 mint set. Thanks.

Envelopes are the same color as the date buttons. Also envelopes are not marked in any manner.

Interesting.
I've seen privately packaged '65 through '67 but this is the first '68.
Private packagers started up again in 1982 when the mint started up but most dropped out in '84 when the mint resumed mint sets. A few continue to '85 and even '86. The '87 halfs weren't available and this stopped them all.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Thanks all. I thought it was weird seeing as it came in the exact same type of brownish envelope that the mint uses along with the 2 cardboard inserts. Just no i.d. on the outside of the envelopes. Pretty decent looking coins anyway in hand. Pics. are awful. The regular u.s. mint sets are only worth around $10.00 ea. anyway. I'll throw them in with my other mint/proof sets pile and when I get all of them done then i'll try to sell all as one lot. More stuff from my recent collection from my stepdad.

Just a FYI .. the 1975 sets are a good place to find the Variety one type of the Ike dollars. All the 1975 sets are Variety I and all the 1976 sets are the variety II Ike's.

Hi
Thanks. Yes, both of the 76 P+D's are type 1 in my 75 set. I was debating if worth it to cut those out from the set. I have found a few in banks as well as 4 ea. 72-P type 2's. I got a decent premium for the 72's but not much on the 76's

Wanted to get back to this. Has anyone else seen any 1968 private pack. sets like this one ? And if so, who made them etc. ? I cannot find any info on it myself. Want to try and track this down. Thanks.
