I was under close scrutiny today at the park I've been hunting at on and off for 30 some years. The second I put my trowel in the ground, two park police cadets approached me and proceeded to tell me what I was doing was breaking one of the park bylaws. I had them get their supervisor who was there in minutes and I explained to him that this was the first I've heard of any bylaw regarding digging. The one that they cited was such a broad one.... One cannot distub the surface of the grass by digging and leaving holes.

I told him that I've been doing this for decades in this very park and I have yet to find one of my holes disturbed or exposed. In fact, the two cadets couldn't find the holes that I had just dug! They were actually quite nice about it and said that if I had written permission from the parks superintendent (a different department) that I could continue as I had been unbothered. I went to the super's office, told him what had just happened and he said he's seen me out in the park and he couldn't care less whether I dug or not because he hadn't received a single complaint. He is going to call the park police tomorrow and tell them I have full permission to continue metal detecting.

I'll keep everyone updated.

Don't be overly sure. Many have rules against detectors, and on some places, they can confiscate your machine.

Never understood why they have rules against detecting on beaches.

I understand the reasoning behind the bylaws where they don't want people removing plants or altering the grass surfaces which could cause accidents or just make it look bad but.... being a courteous, considerate participant in the park should allow for some bending of the rules. Hopefully this will play out in my favor.

you would be surprised how many people dig holes and just leave the holes everywhere. Not every one going out to metal detect are so courteous and its those that are pretty much vandalizing the area that is going to spoil it for everyone else

I'm glad it came out good for you, diggit. You hear so many stories of how some over zealous cop wants to ruin things for everyone.

There are also metal detecting clods who are ruining it for everyone. Sometimes I wonder if it would be best for detectorists have to get a license, and prove you can retrieve a target without making a big mess.

On the other hand, someone who is uncaring enough to leave a hole probably would not bother going to the trouble of getting licensed!

good deal, glad that worked out for you. It just shows that as long as you are respectful to the grounds, they will typically work with you.

congrats diggit, but on the other hand many others are not as respectful of their surroundings and make it difficult on the parks police and others who use the parks for hunting

Many occasions I have seen a metal detector with their volume all the way up, plunge a shovel into the ground, rip up the grass, see that it's a bottle cap and throw it down like they're ticked they didn't find gold and move on without fixing the grass.
Unfortunately, all it takes is one to ruin it for all. You may say they are "over zealous cops" ruining it for all, but it's not them that's ruining it. Just because we take care of cleaning up after ourselves, there are many more who don't and could care less.
This is no different than coin roll hunting, you can always tell who is in it for the joy of the hunt and who's in it strictly to try and make money.
Hopefully you've found some decent items over your span of 30 years there. Can't imagine going back to the same place for that long with no results.

There is a park here in South Pasadena, California that I have wanted to detect for some time now. It's over 110 years old so I know there are goodies waiting. The police around here are on you fast. Maybe I will just give it a go and see what happens.

I am sure metal detecting will require a license of some kind in the coming years. After all, the last act of desperate governments is to bankrupt their citizens.....

Good for you to have gone to the super and have talked
with him. I had a run in here in Liberalsville Taxachusetts.
The whole state has gone berserk. Was out picking up loose
change in an area where there is a hot dog vendor and picnic tables etc. across a state highway away from a drinking water supply reservoir. A State Worker (oxymoron:) from the MDC pulled up in his work pick up truck (he gets paid to drive around all day and do nothing except aggravate people) and tells me it is against the law to metal detect on or around the reservoir. ? I was just standing there doing nothing with the detector in my hand. I went over to him in his truck and asked him his name and where he worked. I then said to him, you mean it is illegal
for me to carry a metal detector on MDC property. He said yes. I did not push the matter. 20 yrs. ago maybe :)
Told him I was going to law enforcement to get the straight scoop on this crap. Speaking of crap, it's o.k. for people to walk their dogs and for 10 million geese to poop in the water etc. as millions of cars drive right by with oil, anti freeze etc. leaking out and trash all over the place.
Heaven forbid I may poison the water supply with my metal detector. Gotta love politics huh ?
Time to move one state north into N.H.

I remember reading about the guy who was hauled into court for removing "live free or die" from his license plate.
