Trying to make the topic somewhat specific. I have a 5gram gold Credit Suisse gold bar in an 18k gold pendant frame and 18k, 18" gold chain. I want to perhaps sell it to purchase an AGE, but I wanted to see what its value is just in gold, meaning spot price. I know the bar obviously weighs 5grams of 24k, but I don't have a scale and wanted to know if you guys had any ideas on how I could weigh this relatively accurately. Once I know the weight, I can determine the gold content easily. Again, I don't have a scale and don't think purchasing one for this purpose only is worthwhile. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Personally, I think for an avid coin collector, having a pocket electronic scale is a valuable asset for now and in the future with all of the counterfeits out there. They can be had for $10-$20, totally worth the investment imho. You could also take it into a jewelery store and weigh it and possibly sell them the chain and frame. You may do better selling the 18k separate as scrap. Just some thoughts. :-)

You can also take it to your local coin shop and have them weigh it for you. Get the total weight in grams and minus the 5 for the bar. You can use coininfo.com and they have a calculator for 18k for the actual value in gold at current market price.

Or you could be really cheap. Buy a scale yourself and return it.

I didn't realize scales were so cheap, maybe I'll just pick one up. THanks for the advice.

Get a scale on ebay. They are very accurate and give you a lot of peace of mind when buying gold coins. The prices are unbelievable for the quality you can get for under $20 with free shipping.

I prefer old fashioned balance scales to digital....no warm up necessary, more robust, & always on. Look into bullet reloading scales...cheap, accurate and simple. The only negative is that mine weighs in grains, so I have to convert...but that is a 10 second deal on any number of websites or programs. It is accurate to 1/10th of a grain, which is great! I predict that it will last forever considering the way it is built.
