So, I thought this coin may be a diamond in the ruff so to speak. If I bid an won it, (and that is a huge if), it would be my first 150 plus year old gold coin....

I think it may hover around 200, via that it has been cleaned, and I would say lightly if that from picture, as this coin seems to have fewer nicks or facial marks, which I see often on these coins that are over 150 years old. I am sure without close instrument examination, no way to tell if it is seriously damaged, as I am sure it would have to be some what...

Curious, how much gold in a 1851 1 dollar gold coin in grams, and I know they are what, 90% gold?

Also, I see graded examples of this coin with ridiculous price tags, say 500 to 18,000 seems like. Could this be a gradable coin, even after cleaning, and what type of grade would you experts figure it might bring?

The image seems to me, is that the surfaces look a little greasy. I could be wrong, it may be just wear. I am just a little nervous......

Looks OK to me. One of my favorite gold coins is a 1914 Indian Quarter Eagle that has been cleaned according to ANACS. The fact that it has been cleaned means little to me as I love the detail on this coin a lot ( uncirculated details, cleaned, net Au50 ) . These coins are famous for not having much lustre or eye appeal and this coin knocks my socks off. If you plan on selling I wouldn't buy a cleaned coin but if you are collecting buy a coin that you love to look at then grab it. You also have return privilege so you can weigh it, and it's still gold! You're going to be rich if you keep it up Hawk!

It's a gram of gold, worth about $75 or so.

Just under 1/20th of an oz Au, IIRC... something like 0.0484 oz. or thereabouts.

This coin looks legit to me. Not a gold coin expert by any means but have seen several of these on various web sites.

Coin can't be graded if it has been cleaned. I have bought 3 of these over the past year and a half and have bought them for a little over the gold weight. One actually came in a bezel and I gave it to my girlfriend and she loves it. I would suspect this might have been in a screw top bezel and removed. These were/are heavily used as jewelery pieces. My grandma even had one back in the day that I remember. It also has the same diameter as a dos pesos gold coin from Mexico if that helps.

I agree. I wouldn't bid over $100 on it personally. If you are looking to spend $200, you can get a problem free certified AU. Here is a nice example:

Thanks guys and Johnny that is not bad deal at all graded eh, $225. I was thinking it had more gold in it than that....

I have a 2.5 Peso, so I can bout figure its size....

Still would be a nice hundred dollar addition or less perhaps....

O.K., here is another from same dealer, 1847 $5 gold coin, same questions, gold content via grams, thoughts of this particular one, and it has been cleaned. This dealer I got my proof 1988 AGE 1 10th oz. from and really like his set up. Seems to find coins with a bit of damage here and there, but always starts at 0.99 cents and gives ten days for payment, ships in one day, etc., all the things we like in a reliable seller. I bet on the weekends at those coin shows, they get good deals on the coins with some slight imperfections, and they sell nice 90% silver coins as well....

Here is another new coin from them, and I have been checking out this Russian coin as well, same questions on gold content (great roubles), or any general thoughts?

I think common date half eagles are perfect, small enough to be arguably affordable but has premiums over melt comparative to the larger gold coins. Obviously I'm a bit biased, but if you can get that 1847 for 5-10% over melt, I'd say it's a decent deal being that it's a slightly better date. Some of the common modern proof commemorative half eagles(like the statue of liberty you posted earlier) I think are steals since they usually go for dead on melt, sometimes even less.
