I won this coin below for 53 total on ebay early A.M., and copy and pasted pictures of it for now. Seems like they go for around 100 buy it now, so not a bad little pick up, esp not only being MS-70 but 25th anniversary and what looks like a real nice coin.... The same dealer silverdollarcoinstore offers Morgans, Peace dollars, Mercury dimes, and early 1900 2.5 gold Indians, all graded starting 99 cents, and with like 9 or 10 pages usually of running auctions, not hard to find a nice high grade, at a low price.... Here is a nice Mercury dime example.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:ITOr ya can't go wrong with a little gold.... http://cgi.ebay.com/1913-GOLD-INDIA...em2a11b37a78And another Eagle just like the one I won at 53 bucks.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:ITEdited by Silverhawk74 06/22/2011 04:56 am

if you zoom in, or find a larger picture you can see the name "Professional Numismatic Coin Guild". According to another thread PNCG apparently gives out high grades.

That's what I thought, another basement grading company. When I first saw the holder I thought it was a PCGS and then I looked closer. That merc dime they graded at MS68 is nowhere near 68,IMHO.It pays to read "close" John1

No matter what grade or who the TPG company is. That ASE is a sweet looking acquisition. Congrats!

Nice looking ASE but quite the premium. PNCG isn't on par with PCGS, NGC, ICG or ANACS so MS-70 is probably being a bit generous. As long as you're happy with the purchase, that's all that matters though. :)

All pictures are over exposed. I can't tell the real grade of these coins.

I really hate commenting on threads like this but I feel it is part of the responsibility we have to take on when someone makes mistakes like this. The TPG is just a basement slabber as was said above and the grade would most likely be less than MS-70 from a reputable TPG. Anytime you see a basement slabbed coin like this you should always bid as if the coin is raw, so in this case I would see what most of them grade (probably lowest would be MS-68 with most around MS-69 since its modern) and then bid that amount on the coin. I really doubt a MS-68 would bring anything much over spot and probably a MS-69 wouldn't bring as much as you paid even in a PCGS slab. Now the positive: this is a relatively cheap mistake compared to others I have seen and made myself, so if you can take the information here and learn from it then its a small price to pay so you do not make bigger mistakes later. Also since you have not even received it yet you may be able to return the coin and only be out the shipping (didn't look at the auction) and then the lesson would cost even less

PNCG PCGS Not olny might fool a bidder into thinking it is graded by PCGS with just a quick look, but looking at the sold items and the fact that everything is private, it appears to me that there may be some shill bidding going on, just my opinion...

Hey guys thanks for that vital info, I should have researched that further. Oh well, still nice coin for 53 bucks IMO, worst cast I payed about 18 bucks for that plastic, lol. At Least that nice coin is sealed away for eternity, and still yet another oz. of silver into the silver stash.... The second example ASE I posted the link too sold a couple hours later for around 58 bucks, so most are aware of the lesser grade. I would imagine they would get up to about 70to 75 via a better grading company. Like your grand parents always said...."If something is to good to be true, it probably is" So would you guys advice against getting anything else via this grade company, or just be smart an bid accordingly. I would like to have a graded example of a 2.5 gold eagle, Peace dollar, Morgan, and Mercury even, as I have none of the fore mentioned?

Quote: So would you guys advice against getting anything else via this grade company I like NGC for slabs myself, mainly because of the new photo verification. The Chinese are getting too good at making fake slabs so I like to be able to verify pics of the coin.

Quote: So would you guys advice against getting anything else via this grade company That is the problem- it is not a real TPG, just some dude in his mom's basement assembling plastic clamshell holders and putting his own inventory in them. The grade is meaningless and has no basis in reality, treat them as raw coins only and bid accordingly but IMO you should avoid them altogether. I would not trust any of those coins(other than the SAE) to be truly problem-free either.

You didn't hurt yourself Hawk. My dealer is still asking $55 for 2011 ASE's. He isn't selling many but that is his current price. I know that he paid $1000 for the roll he bought so he is willing to hang on to them as opposed to taking a hit on them.

Hawk - good deal. Nice purchase regardless of who graded it. I will agree with the rest of the forums that PCGS and NGC etc are the big dogs when it comes to grading and are tougher. However, that is a fine piece of .999 silver you got there!

Remember, buy the coin not the slab but beware of the self slabbers. Enough said on this already. Put it under a loupe when it comes in and grade it yourself. If you are happy, fine. 2011 silver eagles, MS 69 are going for about $55 in NGC or PCGS. Personally I prefer NGC. MS 70 over $100. Raw is spot plus $3-5.
