Browsing the Bay, I keep running across this seller's items. So many of the pics raise a big, red flag for me that I decided to post here--for open discussion.

What do you think? Honest coins--or dipped/polished/photshopped?

Cleaned, and very badly.

100% + feedback, also a top-rated seller. I'd shop there. Some coins he explicitly states they are cleaned, so I think he is trying to be honest. With some coins, it's hard to tell if they had a very mild cleaning.

Yeah...dunno how feedback reflects on what I see. Whenever I see a large group of coins with similar surfaces/color/luster--that gets my attention. If I were at a show, and a dealer had a case with coins like that, I'd walk away.

I tend to dismiss anything that looks like this as they look cleaned/doctored to me.

I keep running across silver coins offered by "theconsignmenthub" that are 100% doctored/cleaned. He states that his coins are over 50 years old and he just "expects" that they've been cleaned at some point. THAT is BULLDUNG. It is no coincidence that 100% of his coins all look the same way! All are shiny and looked scrubbed and dipped BIGTIME.

I do think they should ban those sellers that so blatantly doctor their coins - EVEN IF THEY ARE HONEST in the fine print.

I guess if someone is trying to sell a $2000 coin, I would hope for a better description than "1858 FLYING EAGLE, SMALL LETTER". A thoughtful description of the coin (in addition to the pictures) would be good.

Also, paying $1.95 shipping for a $2000 coin, you have got to be kidding.
