Hello. I hope someone can help me identify the subject of this bronze medallion and possibly the purpose of the piece. It has been suggested it could be Marat.

Many thanks for any help

The only (tenuous) link with Jaea-Paul Marat is the cloth around the head.Even in the David painting (albeit post mortem) Marat is shown with hair protruding from under the cloth.
Similarly, Marat's nose does not appear to have the same shape in the Jean François Garneray portrait.
The medal seems to be a prize or award, and as Marat's reputation diminished after his death he might be considered an unlikely subject, unless of course the medal is Soviet where he was long revered.

A closr shot of the initials on the truncation might give us a clue.

I think the Marat suggestion was based on the hair covering and the laurel wreath. I have to agree that I can't really see a resemblance.

The bronze is signed AWB. Sorry I should have said that in my original post.
