It could be an over polished die. I bought a mint sewn bag that had 5600 1974-D Cents with die clash and over polished dies. You can see the photos of some of the different die pairs here: https://goccf.com/t/89269 Do you have areas of die clash between the columns on the reverse? I can see the Y in LIBERTY and part of Lincoln's neck and beard on most of the coins from the bag.

The Zincoln have a shallow relief. Any agressive polishings affect the mid devices quicker than the muti-hubbed dies. But that is progress. Cost less/get less.

Bay three still show the clash mark that hadn't been polished down enough. The caracks may have happened during the clash as well.

I understand why, but it hurts to see the new coins with no relief at all. The older coins were art and that's why I love them. Most new coins are just sad, flat circles. *sigh* I think that's one of the reasons I collect errors. I like that they are different than the other 99.999997% of the coins we have now. I need coins to collect that have some personality.

So this is a die clash as well? I did notice some funky things in the bays, but you know my stone age photo equipment just cannot get closeups that well. I need to con my wife into getting me a better setup. I have so many coins I have held off on posting because I cannot get clear enough pics.

Coop - your post suggests that all zinc cents are made from single-squeezed dies (versus multiple hubbed dies). Actually, zinc cents started in 1982, and the single squeeze process for business strike coins started in 1997.
The lack of detail on 1983 cents has nothing to do with the single squeeze die making technique.

So coppercoins, what is your prognosis on this cent?

I think it's just an over abraded die with a very minor die clash. I have seen many 1983's that are far worse then this one.IMHO John1

It's a very normal coin. That's my prognosis.
