The bear's face does not look well defined to me.

I enjoy the reverse of these coins with lots of detail from ships to the bridge to even the snow capped mountains in the background. A tribute to design.

Your coin .. while IMHO genuine ... has some issues. Not sure what all the dark streaks on the obverse are ... and the lack of detail on the obverse portrait (the bear) is somewhat troubling. Could be your photo ... for example ... what is going on with the obverse legend "STATES"? Your coin appear to exhibit significant doubling in the photo ... but no DDO of this coin are known to me. Great silver classic commemorative ... one of a few to honor an engineering feat ... in this case the opening of the San Francisco to Oakland Bay Bridge. Net distribution was 71,424 coins. Compare yours to my PCGS MS66 CAC approved example ... Thanks for sharing ... looking forward to seeing your next lovelies. David

Yes, I agree with both of you. The streaks look like fingerprints to my untrained eye. The 'obverse legend "STATES"' oddity is stray light introduced by the rim of the plastic holder. It is not on the coin.
On second look, the bear is not as lacking in detail as the photo implies. At least not in my hand. A victim of poor lighting perhaps, but the strike looks weak nevertheless. I'll try again with some bounce light.
Your coin is an unbelievable specimen! Absolutely beautiful.

A little better detail but not much. This coin may not be a grading candidate. I appreciate your willingness to help.

Seeing it again I am tending to agree with the fingerprint theory for the stain on the obverse. It's a shame on an otherwise lovely coin ... and alas not reversible. The coin can still for sure be graded ... but this is the first that you have shown where I feel ANACS is the preferred option ... they will offer an opinion on technical grade and assign a 'details' grade if needed. Do not despair ... the obverse stains do not prevent any TPG from grading ... but will carry a significant reduction in grade. Feeling like a bit of calibration is in order here ... starting to feel a bit guilty for my photos in your threads! Quote: Your coin is an unbelievable specimen! Absolutely beautiful. These treads are about YOUR coins ... I was showing my examples in the honest spirit of offering a sense of where the market is relative to grading ... and hopefully a grading comparison for you to use. I do not wish to overtake your threads with my coins ... so please let me know if the photos are helpful ... either way ... more than happy to offer whatever support I can .. but no more photos of my coins to compete with your lovelies. David

David, I very much appreciate your willingness to share photos of your collection along with me. Not only do they offer a proper reference point, but coins like yours deserve to be seen and admired. My comments were genuine and posted in the spirit of shared enthusiasm and joy. I do hope you'll reconsider. This journey has been educational on many levels and I encourage anyone who wishes to participate to do so. These coins are so deserving.

Quote: My comments were genuine and posted in the spirit of shared enthusiasm and joy. Well stated and I can not agree more ... my replies and comments have been in the spirit of sharing what I have learned in my quest for these lovely coins ... and my photos have been shared to help support your decision on grade ... as you so well stated ... a reference FWIW. OK ... onward with the photos for any new posts you choose to make ... with the understanding between us that I am humble in my collection and do not wish to be competing for any attention with your coins. IMHO the Classic US Silver Commemorative set is the most under-loved set out there ... a set full of amazing stories, history and fabulous coins. I am enjoying all of yours indeed! David

Thanks for your willingness to keep sharing photos. I respect your reasoning for wanting to avoid the limelight, but who knows, perhaps we can help revive interest in these rare and beautiful issues.
I must confess, after 26 years of storing these coins in a SDB, I recently rediscovered the commemoratives. I was dismayed to learn they had fallen out of favor among collectors and fallen to unthinkable price levels (not that I'm selling). This reality represents an excellent opportunity to add to my collection, as I appreciate them much more now than when I first obtained them. Completing the set would be an awesome goal!

Quote: Completing the set would be an awesome goal! Agreed with that ... and I'm hopeful that your re-introduction to these lovely coins after many years in a SDB might inspire you to seek out others ... The complete 50-coin type set of Classic US Silver Commemorative is a wonderful adventure in history, design, intrigue, greed and even on occasion beauty. Hoping you stay engaged Bill when your current 9 coins run their course ... there are 41 more to go ... and best for you prices in 2011 are significantly lower than when you started in the mid-80's. No pressure. Just enjoying your coins and the correspondence with a fellow enthusiast. David
