I did a search, but I can't really find a specific tripod to go out and buy for a Camera. I've got a canon DSLR and it needs to be sturdy enough to support the camera.

I've found some table top ones, but they don't point straight down like we would need. Also - if it has to be a full sized tripod I would be okay with that as my wife could get use out of it as well.

Someone point me in the right direction!

I just recently purchased an inexpensive "copy stand". I have heard that it can better than a tripod, since the support legs are out of the field of view.

I will advise on the results.

I heartily agree with the copy stand or table. They might be a little more expensive that a tripod, but worth every penny for shooting flat objects. By the way, a really god tripod that has a stabilized movement and is omnidirectional is way more expensive than a copy table.

I use a full-size El Cheapo tripod bought at Best Buy for less than $25. It holds a dSLR with a dedicated macro lens just fine.

For those of you using the table tops - do any of you use a Macro Lens? I know SuperDave does. I'm thinking a little 8" table top isn't going to be able to get me far enough away from the coin if I use a Macro lens.

Reading back in your post - SuperDave, you actually mention the macro :) haha

A tabletop will not hold a dSLR with a macro lens. Even if it can, you won't be able to get the camera high enough to shoot down on the coin, and trying to do this with the camera horizontal will be an exercise in frustration.

So when I go to BestBuy I just need to make sure I can get one that tilts straight down right?

*Any* full-size tripod should be able to point straight down, but check to be sure.

The one I found says "3 way pan." So I assume that's Up/Down/Left and right?

Up/Down, Left/Right and tilting side-to-side.

Here's a follow up question. What is the "remote" that you connect to the camera when its attached to the tripod called? So I can take pictures without actually having to touch the camera. I feel like this would only help with stability.

remote shutter release I think. I made one from a hands free device also from Walmart. It was a mono hands free device made by body glove and was like 4 bucks if I remember correctly and came with the adapter to make the 3.5mm jack fit in the jack that fits in the camera (not sure of the size but probably like 2.5mm)

So I just need to pick up the shutter and whatever sized adapter I need for the camera. Seems simple enough.

You have a Canon dSLR. The software that came with the camera will allow you to run the whole show from your computer, using a USB connection from the camera. No need for a remote shutter release.
