Hello,
I just received a 1918 Newfoundland 50-cent piece that I won on ebay. I bid on it because I liked the design and the high bid at the time was something like $3.00. My total cost with shipping was $15 USD. Considering the coin is certified as VF-25 by ICG grading service (i.e., no cleaning or other problems) and is composed of 0.925 silver this seems like a pretty low price.

So, how did I do? What would be the fair-market value of this coin?

Thanks!

I think you did ok. The melt on the coin is around $12 so you got a fair price. When silver, if silver goes back up to where it was a month or ago or so, you could sell at melt for more. But if it's to fill a hole in a set that your building, then, yes - you got a good deal, put it away for a long time.

Melt value means nothing, what bullion dealers are paying for this coin today is about $9
ICG grading of these coins also means nothing and is a shot in the dark at best, post a pic here for grade
$15-$20 seems to be about what these are selling for in VG10-VF
Try and find a nice US chunk of silver with mintage of only 295,000 for that price
A nice afordable series to collect

DBM, you summarize my thinking nicely. This is a nice collectible large silver coin with low mintage (by USA standards anyway). It will cost $15 at my local shop for any junk silver Walking Lib half and those aren't interesting at that price. The advantage of the ICG certification for me is to help confirm the coin is undamaged and not harshly cleaned. I'll post photos soon; meanwhile I like it!

Nice-looking coin IMO, probably more like a Fine than VF-25 as ICG called it.

I would be suspicious of this coin - yes, I agree it's a fine but why would someone get this coin graded? Obviously, graded wrong to attract a premium price. Buy the coin not the holder.

I've seen all kinds of low-value coins in grading service holders and see nothing suspicious about this one. If the seller thought they would get a premium price by first paying to have it certified their plan didn't work out very well. I don't think ICG will grade any coin for less than about $20 (you have to pay for shipping, after all!). I'm satisfied I got a decent deal for $15, although I would like to score a higher-grade example of the type someday.

Thanks for the input folks!
