Just received my shipment from an auction for estate coins paid $50 for the collection. I was a collector of silver coins from 1999 to 2003 when I was out of work and had to sell my entire collection, well now I am getting back into collecting. Much of the collection of coins were not worth much except this one coin it is an 1889 cc morgan in fine condition. My question is should I keep this one coin or should I sell it to a coin dealer and purchase some of the key date coins plus take some cash out.
thanks,
MgB

I would keep it! Are you sure it's real? That is one of the more expensive Morgans. Is it slabed?

It's definitely real. It is not slabbed, if it was I would have not been able to get it for that ridiculous price. My wife doesn't believe it either, tomorrow we are taking a ride to a reputable coin dealer to get it appraised. I might spend the $$$ to get it slabbed and graded.

If it's real, you are definitely going to want to have it slabbed.

I would agree about having it slabbed, I have been collecting coins since 1963 and have had 2 coins slabbed, one of them were the 1889-CC Morgan. I did so to "lock in the look of the coin", If I might ask, why would you have it slabbed, to keep or for re-sale purposes? , Mike. PS, I figured the collection you received was all the coins banging into each other,Did you know this dated Morgan was a key for the series? I would like to see a picture of the coin, I am sure others would also to assist you in your Grade of the coin.....also, Welcome to the forum....

Keep it, it can only get more valuable with time IMO. I love opening my safe just to look at it and dream about how something so rare made 122 years to end up in my hands.

I had no idea that this coin was in the bag of estate coins. Imagine my surprise!! I do understand that the value might just continue to rise but what if I sold it and then purchased some other key date coins. What I am thinking is look at my profit .

Sell it if you want, they are easy to sell. In fine condition you should get around $800 for it.

Looks harshly cleaned to me but is probably a F15 with details. I'm sure it is real but looks a little off, someone here that is a lot more knowledgable then me will be able to give you a better review of it. Nice coin $600-$800

the MM looks awful weird on this one. Not sure if its a hit or what (can't tell ion those photos. If you want it slabbed I would just go with ANACS because PCGS will just put genuine on the slab with no grade (if it is genuine) and even though ANACS will put a details grade because of the problems you do not have to join any collectors club to submit the coin. Your reasoning about selling makes no sense to me, selling one rare date to buy another just seems kind of stupid to me unless you just like another series more. If you like Morgans then I see absolutely no reason to sell a key date and then buy another key date to keep no matter how much you paid for the coin

Don't like the look of that coin one bit. Tough to tell from images and weird lighting but I would guess a cast counterfeit. If it is genuine, it has been mistreated badly. I just has nowhere near the look of a genuinely circulated Morgan dollar. How much of that is due to phtography I don't know, but I don't think all of it is due to image problems. Good luck and I hope it's genuine.
