its a bad thing, whizzing means the use of a fine wire brush to make the fields deeper and cover up flaws

Whizzing is a method of improving the appearance of a coin using mechanical methods such as a rotary tool and a fine wire brush. one way to tell a coin that has been whizzed is there is usually build up around the features of the coin. when they use a fine wire brush to make the feilds deeper than they originally are and make the details stand out more they cant use it to get into the details very well so the buildup occurs especially around the date and that is one thing I look for to help identify a whizzed coin. there is a pretty good guide on ebay guides to help identify whizzed Shield nickels but the same thing applies to all whizzed coins, the guide can be found here and is a pretty good read http://reviews.ebay.com/Identifying...1:LISTINGS:1

Whizzing is a bad thing. What it is means it's taking some sort of wire brush and "polishes" it. On one hand, this was done in the past to make the coin more "shiney" but on the other hand, this causes severe marks on the coin.

Hence, whizzing is avoided in the numismatic field if possible.

As given on the PCGS web site:

Whizzing
Term to describe the process of mechanically moving the metal of a lightly circulated coin to simulate luster. Usually accomplished by using a wire brush attachment on a high-speed drill.

Start with a plain old Kennedy....

Whizzing-????

Polish up just the portrait...

Whizzing-????

Don't like it polished? Take a dremel with a brush and whiz it...

Whizzing-????

Actually, unless you knew what you are looking at, the coin looks wonderful. It looks like a prooflike coin, my pics don't do it justice. The whizzing, when you look close, looks a lot like frost on a proof, which is way they look so much like proofs.

Whizzing-????

This is what true frost looks like. Notice that there is no real direction to it like the whizzed coin I made. I think if someone practiced they could make some very convincing fakes

Whizzing-????
