Hi all... I was thinking about that beautiful 2009 Ultra High Relief $20. They're selling for $2300 - $2500 in 69 and $3k plus in 70 (which is why I was thinking about it and not just popping for a few hundred of them)... ;)

hee heee... But seriously, what are the advantages and disadvantages of buying this ounce of gold over a classic $20 - or any coin - at face or above? Is a 2009 in 70 a good or bad ... I use this term loosely ... investment?

If you're looking for an investment, going high grades on rounds imho is not the way to go.

You will lose out a lot on the value when you resell, especially if not to a collector.

In my opinion the time to buy these was when they were issued. I think they were 11 or twelve hundred. I dont see too much room for the prices moving up unless gold jumps a whole lot.

Alright, so so far I take it that the premium coins are not worth the extra investment because their numismatic value is not as strong (when compared to their bullion value) as the classics, am I correct?

Thanks for the input! =)

If you're buying PMs for Bullion appreciation, the closer to spot the better.

Acceptable premiums on Silver 1 ounce rounds is about $2-$4 and for gold its about 2-3% over spot. Atleast thats what I expect around here.

I picked up a Gold Mexican 1/4 ounce Libertad for 3 dollars over spot.. I couldn't get the money out of my wallet fast enough. :D

Classic gold is a great way cause the premiums are usually very low, and they are easy to liquidate and sell if needed.

Thanks for the advice, Ian. I'm actually not necessarily interested in Bullion appreciation, just appreciation. I fear numismaniac may be correct - there's a heavy premium on the nice modern gold that isn't necessarily justified. Now may not be the time to buy one.

They're just so beautiful! There's a PL on HA right now that's stunning.
