Alright Morgan collectors (I think there might be one or two of you here...)
What's the most popular Morgan set collectors go for? Circulated? AU? 63?
When you're buying keys and semi-keys, do you go for something higher than your set or lower?
You can answer for yourself or from your experience and what you've seen... I'm interested to know!! =)
Thank you!

I am working on a Morgan Date Set (Dansco 7171). Just a few rare coins left to get. I try to get an AU if the price is okay. Otherwise, they are a little below AU. On the rare coins, I will probably drop down a little more just to fill the spot, then upgrade later.

I am assembling the Morgan Date Set also and am trying to make it a matched MS-63 set with just three exceptions, the 1893 and 1894-S will be AU and the 1895-O an XF. Ed ANA LM-3175

From what I've seen, the happiest coin collectors (regardless of concentration) collect what appeals to them, rather than being driven by some external "list" or "consensus" of "popular." I say this pointedly, and meaning no offense - if you do not collect that which you like to look at, you'll never be happy. For me, it would be either the entire date/mint set of Morgans in 64+ DMPL or AU. Or, the similar set of Lincolns in MS65Brn. Or, Bust Halves in XF. Or 19th Century European copper in Mint State. Or Austrian and German Talers in VF-XF. It wouldn't even have to be silver, or American, much less Morgans (and you know how I like Morgans ). "Popular?" Easy. Full date sets, with date/mintmark sets second. Best grade you can afford, making allowances for keys. But your job is not to make *us* happy.

What he said. Collect what will make you happy. Other than the one in my 7070 and two I have for my son, I do not collect Morgan dollars. Yet. Eventually I want to build Dansco dollar date set, like the one in this post here.

LOL - I think my original post is misunderstood. Perhaps I should have done this in a poll format. I'm just curious what people are doing. =)

I been have kicking around the notion of a "mint" set of Morgans; P, D, S, O, and of course CC (but I don't want to break it out of it's GSA holder). I would like to assemble semi-keys, since I can't afford the "keys". Or you could have an ascending grade collection; P, AG, G, VG, F, VF, XF, AU, BU. So many different ways to collect. Love those cartwheels!

I have lots of morgans. My favorites are CC. But I do like the PL, DMPL dollars also. I have some keys and semi keys but I'm not trying to collect 1 of each example. I also like nicely toned morgans and the dates dont matter to me. I mainly collect bu unless it is a semi key/key or CC. Those coins I will buy in lower grades but only problem free.

I know I have said this before but when I first started collecting Morgans I looked at price guides and noticed that in most dates the price difference between MS-64 and MS-65 were sometimes tripled, so I started collecting MS-64 Morgans when I was collecting them by date/mm because I figured the the MS-64 had the most gain potential
