Alright so I know this will probably sound stupid to most of you, but this is a very new topic for me. When I think of collecting a set of coins, I'm thinking every date and MM that was intended to be minted for that set. I don't care about the varieties or errors (some I do want, but I don't consider my sets to be incomplete if I don't have them).

So date sets... Is this a common thing? Does it mean that I have to get the Philly mint of the coins? Or does the MM not matter at all, just that I get an example of that year?

Again, sorry if this sounds stupid, but it's a pretty much a brand new concept to me.

I am currently working on a Morgan dollar Date Set. A Morgan dollar from each year, MM doesn't matter. Dansco 7171 is the album. I will probably start on a Peace dollar Date Set next, but I don't think anyone does a Peace dollar Date Set album, so I will probably just use a Peace dollar album (#7175) for the date set, and possibly more.

Wow I had no idea Dansco actually made Date set albums. I already bought the two albums for the complete Morgan set, but I don't know that I'll be finishing it anytime soon. So the idea of just getting one per year seemed like a good idea.

There is no wrong or right, it is really up to you!

I have always collected date and mint.

However, I am considering just doing a date set for the Presidential dollars since the mint mark is obscured by the album (being on the edge).

I am also considering the Dansco dollar date set, inspired by this post here.

I have the date sets for Lincoln Jefferson,Roosevelt,Washington, Franklin,Kennedy,Ike,SBA, all with proofs. It took me years to do it and I did it by buying the mint sets. It was cheaper doing it that way than buying the individual coins. This only works well from say 1960 to present on the mint sets. I also bought all 1999 to present mint sets right from the US mint. I have been working on the Morgan dollar date and mm set for as long. Some of the coins are out of reach for me right now. I have only two coins left to go on my Peace dollar set. I enjoy the challenge of completing these sets.

That is pretty cool. I just can't decide. I really like having all the Dates and MM. I just might use the Dansco's I have and get say every year first just to have and then maybe get every year in O or CC or w/e

I like sets that are not the regular, standard Albums that everyone else uses. For example for a date set I started a Proof only Album using 2x2's and those 20 slot pages and a large 3 ringed binder. This Album is slowly accumulating all Proofs of all US coins in all denominations. Presently only Cents, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters and Halves. No Dollar ones YET.
