So I get these in my email from time to time, but found this article on my own search. I see copper posts often, and what else is there to say really, other than I personally do not recall any sound theory's to point towards copper being the next silver, or dare I say gold, but this article pointed out some interesting factors (concerning India and China) to which makes me think a 100 oz. bought and stuck away while it is still real cheap is not a bad idea. I thought the fundamental reasons for copper going up made sense and I found the last paragraph interesting about US debt, Beijing, and a new copper based currency....

I found a site which is the only to offer true 4 oz. bars "they claim" with any image of choice even beyond the Walking Liberty, Buffalo, Morgan, etc. They offer 400 oz., via 100 4 oz. bars for $289 total, and 100 oz. at 119. Considering the ebay copper premiums, this is not to bad. The first being just over 72 cents an oz, or $2.88 per bar. This must be where most ebay copper sellers get their stock, as those bars seem to bring a bit more than $2.88 each on ebay....

One may say still ridiculous premiums in the end, and true that. But really is 120 bucks for 100 1 oz. coins, at a $1.20 each that much in the bigger picture of things, esp with collectors with longer term plans like myself? And I don't wanna be the guy who has no copper coins or bars, and could have bought several hundreds of dollars worth, but did not because I was worried about some other dealer making premiums on us all....

I am gonna keep stackin silver when I can for now, and a bit of gold, but here one day may pull the trigger on some copper....

I would say if youre going to do it, more smaller pieces would be better than a large "hunk" of 100oz.

I've been thinking this same thing, but for now I'm just putting away copper cents that I find, with the occasion roll searching.

I am still getting copper cents from rolls at just under 20%.So,at that rate,in a fifty roll box you get 10 copper rolls. About 3 rolls to the pound, you've got 3+ pounds of copper for $5 . That's a bargain and,to my way of thinking, the cheapest and easiest way to accumulate copper.

I agree with hockingzig. I'm pulling copper out of bank boxes too and it's a lot cheaper that way.

Yeah Hock, that does sound great, for a great price, do you buy (or trade them in at equal face value) them at your bank or Eba or something?

Well can for example in my situation, go down to my bank or credit union and trade in cash bills for say rolls of copper pennies? Or are you buying many rolls, and getting the copper out here or there, and have figured a % of how many you will find in each 50 roll batch if you will?

One angle I do like in favor of these copper coins, people love the look of the one oz. rounds with the four or five most popular images, be it silver, gold, or even copper it seems. So that may be one advantage for the collector who prefers that over the mini Lincolns....

Silverhawk,I just go to the bank and either buy boxes of cents(one bank will order them for me but most won't)or just buy 10 rolls from a teller. I search them, keep the wheat cents and other pre-1982 copper cents, and any high quality ones I find. Then I re-roll them and trade them in for more. Now,the trade in part can be tricky but after you establish a relationship with a group of tellers it is easy. I mark my rolls so the tellers know which ones I have seen. I have been doing this for 6 years now so I have my tellers trained! I show them any cool finds and buy them cookies once in a while and it works out well.I have well over $1000 face value copper cents right now. If copper goes to $4.50 a pound I plan to sell a few boxes!

I agree with Hock. I have been buying 1 0r 2 boxes of pennies from my bank per week. The bank never says anything about it and seems happy to do it for me. I have been getting about 25% pre-1982 and about 10-15 wheats per box, plus I really enjoy opening all those rolls!

The thing about copper that people don't seem to understand is it's value in other forms. Go buy yourself a roll of 6 gauge bare ground wire...wait a few years. It'll double in price. It's happened consistently for the past ten years. Same thing for plumbing pipe. I've seen 1/2" copper water pipe double in cost in the last couple years. Pennies are not the only way to get copper, they just have no loss potential. The real money in copper is not in bullion, it's in predicting increases.

My local school district is building a new school. The estimates were required to be locked, with no price change for cost of materials. Well, when you have a project that takes two years to complete...and you've seen copper change as much as it has, the mechanical contracting companies are going to be lucky to make a profit based upon the losses in raw material costs alone.

There was a day when Silver was so common no one gave it much thought. Granted it took 50 plus years for it to become what it is today.

So it is possible Copper could do the same, who knows it is so common today. SO when are we going to start taking out the plumbing?

I save Copper Pennies by habit, I remember when Wheaties were abundant and regret not saving more of them. I don't know I might bite on some of those copper coins just to have them, after all they are interesting.

Snowman70, great info there thanks a lot. I found your post very insightful, esp the paragraph about the two year school build and the contractors loosing out on profit as copper pipes and wire double in price before the job finishes. Perhaps we should buy rolls of copper wire, and wait for them to double and triple in prce, lol. There will always be a demand for it in the construction world obviously....

Hey thanks Bruce, I think I am gonna get a roll here before long as well. I am still real new to these Pm's, and obviously don't have the purchasing connections someone who has been doing it for decades has, but I am pretty good at searching in search engines, key words and all. And I bet you would have to look real hard, to find better premiums on bars an coins that that link offers....
