Bronze Two Pence / New Pence. Copper Value?

American and Canadian cents are worth close to 3 cents in copper value. The British Two Pence is so huge I was wondering what melt value was. Same goes for the old 1 penny coins. What is the melt value on those? They changed from bronze to steel in 1992 Do you hoard the copper coins in the UK- Americans and Canadians do. Report this Post to the Staff

mmorgan22 Pillar of the Community United States 570 Posts	Posted 07/11/2011 5:38 pm A pre 1992 2 pence coin is made from 97% copper. That makes the melt value of this coin about $0.066. This is at current market price of copper right now as I am looking at it. This means that a 1 pence would be half that. The calculation is bellow. Current spot price of copper x conversion for grams x weight in grams x percentage of copper (4.3172 x .00220462 x 7.12 x .97) = $0.0657 Edited by mmorgan22 07/11/2011 5:39 pm Report this Post to the Staff

I suspect I'll never trade it in - its really more bother than it's worth - but it gives me an excuse to check my change periodicially for errors anyway.
