Hi,

I'm asking this for my son(12) who's been into coins for the last year or so. He's been going thru the site and wanted me to post this for him. AFter he gets familar with the site, I'll set him up to log on. It's a pic of an 1880 Morgan dollar and he thinks there's a double die mark on the letters. Is this a double die mark?

thanks,
Al

First of all, Welcome to the forum, there are allot of morgan collectors on this board (me included) and all are eager to always help with any morgan question. Now about the coin, hmm, is that the only place on the coin that its doubled like that? I can't really tell if its doubled or Mechanical Doubling but other morgan collectors are more knowledgable in that field and they should know, but I would look and see if there was any other doubling and if you do happen to find some snap a picture of them also.

Thanks for the reply. I know nothing about coins but found this site for my son to read. For the past year, he's read alot on the net and some magazines and seems to retain all the info. I should look for some type to coin club for him to join. I'll have him keep and eye on this post.

thanks,

Al

Welcome Al, I think doubling was the hardest thing to get straight in my mind, took a lot of posts and lots of help from the folks on this forum to clear the muddy waters. Anyway here are a couple of links http://www.geocities.com/NCADD/educational1.html and http://www.geocities.com/NCADD/educational3.html that has great pictures & explanations of doubling. If I've learned anything that is mechanical on your coin, not a double die. Keep on collecting.

Welcome alkoz!!!!

Tell your son he has a GREAT eye.

We usually need full pics of the obverse and reverse to attribute a VAM. Sometimes the part you find the most interesting is not the part they use to define the VAM. All the VAMs in the books have to do with the date.

Go to http://www.ashmore.com/index2.htm and click on VAM updates and then on "images..." it takes a long time to load, but worth it. Have your son check out the 1880 coins and see if he can find anything that matches his coin. Have fun!!!

I love the coin!!!
