Can anybody help me out...
I found a Napoleon Eagle coin "Dix Centimes" M mintmark today while metal detecting here in Western Australia. I'm waiting for the date to show after a good soak in grape seed oil but all the main features are visible.
The reverse (eagle side)has been struck upside down 180 degrees, Is this normal for all of these types of coins? I will post pics asap...
thanks

sounds like the design used during the Second Empire, of Napoleon III, from 1852 to 1870.

Minmark is MA and stands for Marseille, Toulouse (mintmark M) has stopped minting coins in 1836. 1853 and 1857 would be the best years. French coins have all been minted in coin alginment before the introduction of the euro. Nice find!

Thanks for the answer Peter, yes I think your right from what I have just researched on the net...
And Maudry Thanks too, I am very happy with this find as it is quite rare to find world coins on the gorund here in Oz, let alone ones as old as this would the one I found be a genuine mint error then?

Quote: would the one I found be a genuine mint error then? No. "Coin alignment" means 180 die degree rotation. Zero degrees rotation, like on Australian coins, is called "medal alignment". In the mid-1800s, the Australian colonies were all desperately short of small change. A French 10 centimes would have happily circulated as the equivalent of a penny.

Great thanks so much for the info Maudry and Sap, Always very much appreciated!!
First time I've seen this kind of coin alignment in person, so much to learn and discover in this game :)
After seeing the pic Maudry, that is the exact coin I have, sadly minus the beautiful condition lol
and Sap, great knowledge mate, Thanks again

Fun fact: I have a Dix Centimes from 1854 (mintmark B) in a condition (but not grade) pretty much opposite to that of the OP that is, I was able to see the date and mintmark pretty much immediately, but the only visible part of "Dix Centimes" was a faint "...imes". It took me quite a bit of Google-research to determine with any certainty that it indeed was a Dix and not a Cinq
