I had this one set aside from searching a few years ago. The edge lettering on the central coin doesn't match up with the same edge lettering on the other Presidential dollars. In the pics I took, the date and mintmark match up, but then the motto and other writing is not completely aligned. I know about the various edge lettering positions, but can anyone think of a way that the edge lettering would not be aligned properly? These are three different images that I threw together. Hopefully they're clear enough.

now that is strange, there definately is at least a variety hear if not an error. Perhaps the spacing was set differently on the edging machine.

I don't remember what they call them, but I think they were caused by some type of slipping while the edge lettering was being put on.

All three of these are John Adams dollars. I will probably try and send these to someone to be attributed (not necessarily a TPG) unless someone has some good info or a link, since I haven't seen anything like these out of the edge lettering errors so far. The only explanation I can think of is that the coin rotated too much/little in the edge lettering process. Thanks for the replies so far.

I personally do not think it adds value nor collectability. That is just my opinion. The edge lettering on these things cannot be seen if the coin is placed into most any kind of holder, 2x2, airtites with foam rings, or even TPG slabs. I for one hate edge lettering.

Edge slippage occurs when the coin, rather than rolling along evenly through the edge lettering machine, sticks and slides instead of rotating. The result is that on part of the edge the lettering will be closer together than it should be, while in another area there will be a wider space than normal. In extreme cases the coin can stick as several letters go past. This will cause the letters on the edge die to actually gouge out a groove in a spot on the edge of the coin

I know there is not much hype out there for these dollars but I've got about 70 top graded ones for trade or sale.

If they are common, they end up being considered as normal in my eyes.

Just my personal opinion but it was the worst $$ I ever spent.

The problems they were having with edge slippage was why they made a change to the edge between the 2007 and the 2008 coins. An extra period was added between the mintmark and the E so there would not be such a large area on the edge with nothing there. The long blank area was especially prone to slippage.
