I recently acquired this 1931-S Lincoln Wheat cent and would like to get your opinion on two things. First, I am interested in the authenticity of this coin. I know their are many counterfeits out there. Secondly, opinions on the grade would be much appreciated.

It doesn't seem to be counterfeit, and as for the grade I would say about XF/AU.

I presume a scan? .. hard to grade from scans, but I would say EF-45 at least, and it looks authentic to me.

The mint mark doesn't look quite right to me. It seems to be awfully close to the 9 in the date.

All the 31's lincoln's I have seen have the mintmark tucked up in there. Looks to a MS coin to me. Very nice

It is a nice coin...but something does not look right...at least compared to my (not trying to be competitive) 31-S. MM looks a little close, but then they free-handed back in the day. Anybody know how many obverse dies were used for the 31-S?

I have to agree with oih82, not sure if it's the scanner, but it's really hard to see the coin properly. The MM looks a bit too sharp, a macro picture of the MM is needed. My gut reaction was a cast fake, I can't see the flow from the fields into the rims. That area is usually rounded, not sharp and square, but the scanner has no depth. The rims almost look too sharp. However, the planchet marks on the shoulder told me it's a genuine Lincoln. Is the coin actually brown?
All I can say for sure is it's a 1931 Lincoln, around AU50-55. I'd get it slabbed to settle the issue. I prefer my key dates in slabs. I can't stand the uncertainty. LOL All of them have been so widely faked, it's dangerous waters out in the wild.

This coin is more than likely a fake, the long tail on the 3 nearly touching the 9 is one of the markers for a known fake. check the upper left field on the reverse, if the surface shows a somewhat scattered granulated appearance the coin has both markers for this fake , if it has that detail then the coin is surely a fake. Information from Breens encyclopedia of US coins. The scan is not the best for seeing detail on the coin, I will leave it up to you to authenticate your coin.

The mm does look strange. AU-55 off these scans.

I think the scan is throwing everyone off... 'nolawyer' has a 1931S in the Auction forum that looks identical to this one...take a look..

Scans seem to exaggerate the weak points of a coin. Is the color depicted on this thread close to actual?

I think it is the light from my Canon MP160 scanner that is causing the color variation. Perhaps a scan with a different dpi setting would do the trick? The resolution is currently at 600 dpi.

Changing the scanner settings will not help, using a camera with macro would. Scanners just suck for imaging coins.

Thank you all for your feedback. I am submitting this coin to ANACS and will post the results soon. Cheers!
