Not sure about this one. Is this a missing layer quarter?

What does it look like edge on?
Have you weighed the coin to see if it is lighter than normal?

it looks like its gone, but it also looks like it may have been chemical treated to eat away the clad layer also so I'm not 100% sure going by the pictures provided

I doubt it's an eaten coin - the clad layer is typicall too thick to eat off and have such smooth relief left behind.

My guess (without its weight) is that it is either genuine or is toned...yes, toned.

I was helping a dealer once with some quarters he found that had "missing layers" just like this. Without weighing them, I assumed he was correct, and started placing them in 2x2s for sale. One of them had a bit of dust on it, so I swabbed it quickly with some acetone, and the copper color came right off. I took another out of its holder and swabbed it - same effect. I eventually figured out that he had these sitting in a tray outside their holders for months and they had taken on achemical tone that made them look strikingly like missing layer coins. This one could have the same effect.

Upon viewing the edge photo of the coin I would say there's a far better likelihood that this coin is a genuine missing layer coin...but still cannot say for sure without a weight.

I actually thought at first that maybe it was just tarnished so I soaked it in acetone for 24hrs and nothing came off. That is what lead me to believe that it might be a missing layer coin. Thanks everyone, I will attempt to get to my uncle's who has mini scale.

Check your Red Book. It has the weight for quarters.

I can tell you if its a legit missing clad error, error collectors love them things and I have seen some sell for upwards of 75-100 dollars so its a nice find. If it were mine I would probably send it off for authentication just to prove to any buyer in the future that it is a real error but everyone here knows my opinion on slabbed coins so that should be no surprise

Hey wrongalot,

Quarters should weigh 5.67 grams. If your coin is missing a layer it should weigh 4.7 grams. A noticable difference. I mean you could hold it in your hand with a regular quarter and feel the difference.

As far as the edge it should be all copper, no nickel showing.

GRRRRR
It weights 5.67g, so it is not a missing clad. Something else is responsible for the coloring. Can't get it off, tried soaking and rubbing in acetone, not changing anything. oh wellll
