Pulled this out of an old $ 1000 bag of Ikes today. She's not silver but the entire rim is pure white (All nickel?). The obverse has some severe (Don't know the term) striations on it from an ill-prepared planchet. Turn it over... unc... mmmm

It looks like it was plated outside the Mint.

Most plating jobs do not add nearly enough metal to obscure major detail and the moon craters would indeed be considered major detail. So little metal is added that it is virtually impossible to detect by weight due to planchet tolerances. A weight would be helpful, if it is normal for CuNi clad then you just have a plated coin.

Peaceman:

There are 2 known 1776-1976D Type 2 Ikes made off metal (SILVER). Value on these is $15,000 to $25,000.00.

Your coin it a 1776-1976P- Type 2. I don't see any mint mark on the Obverse and its difinitely a Type 2 reverse.

If this coin weighs 24.50 grams etc, it would be the first off metal (SILVER) 1776-1976P Type 2. * unless it's been plated etc- but it still would be worth having it attributed if the weigh pans out correctly. (IMHO)

Good luck, hope you got something really rare here!

Chuck.

* Sorry, missed your post on the weight before I posted.

Darn- would have been great to have that in at 24.5G. :(

Looks like a clad from what I can see on the rim. The way I determine if something is plated is to pick a letter on the coin and use a razor blade on the groove of the reeding. This way the reed isn't damaged and you can tell if it was plated or not.
