There are still quite abit of nice 1960's cents to be found...do you think there will be alot of nice looking 50 year old Zincolns in 1961? No way...they will all be dust...I think Zincolns will be worth more in time...imo...I hate the shield design. Compared to the iconic and symbolic Lincoln Memorial its ugly and plain...

It has taken a little over 25 years to reduce the copper cents in circulation to the 15 - 20% level. But they look the same as the Zincolns. the Wheat cents took about 15 to 20 years to be reduced to a scarcity in circulation. The Shield and the Memorial look very different just as the Memorial looked very different from the Wheat. But there are more of the Memorials. So I would say that assuming they continue making the Shield cents, with no radical change in material appearance, I would say about 20 years at the most. If they stop making cents, then I would say about one year.

I expect that 2000 years into the future the LMC will still be considered a common, however interesting, little artifact with nominal value. |

I hoard copper cents and the Shield cents - we are going to get to a point where the oldest cent you will find is 1982 upon box searches. I do have hundreds of individual Shields saved. It's more or less me trying to see how many I can have. I am fully aware they are worth one cent!
Also, to add on, TheDanMan, with copper being hoarded more and more often, that is going to take quite a chunk of the circulating Memorials out, leaving only 25 years worth of Memorials.

I don't think Memorial cents will be scarce anytime soon. There were far too many minted. However, well-struck, spot-free, EDS specimens are a different story. They are already scarce. Therein lies the key to collecting them.

I love that term 'Zincolns'. I never heard that before today. I think the LMC's will disappear faster than everyone thinks because in the next few years, the U.S. will stop making cents entirely due to their cost. After that happens, all cents will disappear quickly. That is why I save all the copper cents I can find. |

I saw mentioned somewhere else that there were errors in the 10s or 11s and a link was posted to a site showing those errors. As I am a moron, I failed to follow said link and I dont remember what thread it was in. Anyone care to help this moron out?

Once the Lincoln Memorial Cents that are copper are hoarded from circulation, that will leave a lot fewer Memorials around, just primarily zinc ones. Even more of those will be corroded and destroyed because of that, by that time leading to a ton more Shield cents out there than Memorials. By then, an analogy will be in place: What a Memorial cent is compared to a Wheat cent will be identical to a Shield cent compared to a Memorial cent. |

I am one of those that thinks that a shield on the reverse of our coins is just typical of bland, boring, US coinage. No real thought to this one at all. At least the Memorial ones had some thought to them. Regardless, at the rate coins are being melted, thrown into lakes/river/oceans, smashed, shot at, buried, etc. shouldn't take to much longer to get rid of everything. At a zoo last weekend they have a machine that you put $0.50 in and a Cent and it smashes that Cent and puts an animal picture on it. Just one more way to get rid of them all. I've said this before. In the not to distant future, all coinage will be gone. The trend is slowly becoming a plastic card. I use mine about 855 of the time now. My Son uses plastic almost exclusively. Keep looking around and you'll notice how many buisnesses make it easier and easier to use plastic. And no more pennie gum ball machines around either. |

I think that it is possible that zinc memorials will dissapear faster than copper, because of how fast they deteriorate.

Here is a picture of 1 billion dollars in $100 dollar bills. Now multiply that by 500.
