I only have been coin roll hunting for about a month. I normally get Lincolns cause I like searching for errors and other varieties. Anyways, I found this 1946 S Jefferson. I looked it up and it only has a mintage of 13 million. I'm assuming its a keeper even though its not in the greatest condition.

What do ya think?

I keep all pre-1960, and 1946-S is one of the less common ones. If you want to fill a book from circulation, I'd certainly hang on to it because it's not like you'll be seeing them in every box. The condition is nothing to write home about, but a little better than the average for 40s era coins I see.

It never hurts anything to keep these, they only cost a nickel and it fills a hole until a better one pops up.

Guess I'm gonna get a Nickel Book...lol...Go you guys search for errors in Nickels? Am I right to say there aren't as many varieties in nickels as there are in cents?

i'd say yes. I've done 17 boxes and don't have that one yet. if you are going for a complete jefferson set from circulation then it is a definate yes. up to you though.
if I were not trying to put a full set together, I would still keep anything with under 20 mill mintage.

I agree. I would keep it, even if you do not need it, someone else might.

For sure a keeper in my view ... a reasonably tough Jefferson to pull today from circulation.

For comparison ... I have found 9 of these in 252,00 coins searched ... an average of 1 each 1946-S every 27,950 coins searched.

Nice find. Start a Jefferson folder or album. Join us nickel searchers for some fun.

Welcome to nickel collecting, a very enjoyable hobby.

Your coin is definitely a keeper, regardless of condition. The mintage was 13.6 million. My son and I have found a total of 11 of these so far.

I'm doing just a fraction better than nickelsearcher - I've found 4 in 100,000 or 1 in every 25,000 searched. I'd keep it. I've got far worse around here somewhere.

Any S coin is a keeper for me, no matter the condition. Especially since I don't get that many where I live. I don't think I have ever gotten a 46s from circulation (but I could be wrong). I just started searching nickel rolls. Starting with 10 rolls a week...

S coins are always great coins to find in boxes or rolls.
