So my classic nickel album is a custom-labeled job with a page for Shield nickels, a page for Liberty nickels (see https://goccf.com/t/77381 for pics of my completed Liberty set), and two pages for Buffalo nickels. I finally picked up the last Buffalo nickel I needed (no varieties, just mint and year set). My 1913-S Type II. I went to the dealer with a specific coin in mind... they had a coin with great details but 4 or 5 deep gouges on the surfaces -- like it had been picked up by a lawnmower. It was a unique coin and I thought I could get it for about $180, but it had already been sold. So I came home with this one instead: The dealer says it's been cleaned, but I got it for $300 (actually about $290 because they threw in some extras I was shopping for). Seems like about a F-12 to me?

I think you're shorting yourself three points. I am looking at an F12 just back from NGC and yours has a slightly better overall appearance, especially on the reverse. I would not hesitate giving it a F15, but it won't make VF. Great coin. That's a hard one to fill in.

Was this the one on ebay or no because I see the "Hole filled" caption?

captain -- I've been following your quest with great interest! I've been experimenting making hobo nickels, and one of my suppliers of dateless buffaloes keeps selling me coins that have 2 digits of the date showing (and he's the cheapest supplier, too), to I finally got an album to start putting them in. He sells them to me at 13 cents each, and I have about a third to a half of the album filled. I also ended up with a complete mint-mark set of type I from that supplier and sold them on ebay for $11 for the set (which cost me 39 cents). So you've been inspiring me even though I haven't resorted to nic-a-date yet.

That's a good price to get dateless at. Do the hobo thing on the partial date 1920 nickels. I've got a mountain of those, and you can identify the dateless 1920s without Nic-a-Date.

Woo Hoo! Great job! I hope to one day be able to have a nice set of Buffalos. Most of mine are Nic-a-date.

congrats on completing the set-as far as that coin being cleaned, it's very difficult to tell from the pics-it's not unusual to see a nice golden color to Buffs-especially those that didn't see much circulation-on the high points the wear will take away that hue or color-I'm just not convinced it was cleaned.
