I am finding that Lincoln Memorial "S" mint marks are more rare than wheat cents in the bank rolls that I search. Of my brass LMC cent rolls, (hundreds), I have saved all S's, and they only make up 0.7% total. I live in NC, so I expect scarce S mints. That's about 1 out one every 150 cents I search. What is your ratio? Do you save them? |

I have not been roll searching long, but in approximately 15,000 cents I have gone through I haven't found anything close to 1 out of 150. Based on that ratio I should have found 100 S mint cents. After checking my reserve I have found less than 30, so you are doing pretty well in finding S mints based on my results.

i buy copper from a guy on the west coast and the s mints there are pretty good. in a 100 face I found 4 and 1/2 pounds of s mints. but that was all copper

I wonder how many S mint cents one finds in a box that is searching in San Francisco?

They are scarce in my area (midwest) but folks on the left coast find them all the time. Forum member Scotty finds so many I think he had to quit saving them. LOL

Let's see. Here in san diego I have completed 30 boxes. so that is 75,000 coins. I have 250 total wheats, and 868 s mint cents. (57 of the 250 wheats were s mint wheats.) so I think I find one s mint out of every 86 cents. and 1 wheat out of every 300 cents. and 1 s mint Wheat cent out of every 1,315 cents. so it definately is swayed by where you live, I'm 8 hours south of san francisco and get quite a bit of their coins. east coasters have a harder time. hope my states helped out though. |

I really haven't kept track....but probably out of 3 boxes (7500 cents) I would take a gander at about 10...yeah...not very close to 1 out of 150..unless that 150 means $150.....Im just sayin

I have searched about 3/4 of a million cents and have saved all the "S" mints and I think I have around 20 rolls. I am in Michigan. John1  |

That's about what I get in Ohio too John. There's hardly any S mints in this part of the country which creates the perception they are somewhat rare when they in fact are not.

BadThad is right, I used to think the S-Mint cents were rare several years ago. But, based on the fact that there are more S-Mints found in San Diego and about that area, does that mean by definition if someone finds a 1909-S VDB, it would be found out west?

Yes, but a 1909 S mint has had more time to make its way over to the east coast than a 1970 S mint.  |

Right on Willy! And if anything you'd get a 1909-S with no VDB but either way I'll take it! I am in Michigan so to me any S mint is a geographical rarity! I don't know whether or not to trust About.com, but there is a Memorial cent value listing there, and it stated that the value of the 1968-1974 S-Mints can be Three Cents (the same as common wheats). |

Thanks, folks! I appreciate y'alls insight. I'll continue to stash 'em away. My son is a collector too, and he'll probably end up with 'em when the worms are eating me.
