I've considered starting to fill my LWC Dansco with BU/MS Coins only. I'd just like a really nice set and was wondering what the entire set would cost (if this is even possible to calculate)

I'd like to know because I want to set money aside and start buying. I'd hate to get half way and realize that it would just be too much. Any ideas?

Thanks

You could take a calculator and go through the Red Book, Coin Trends or even better a dealer's listing. That should give you a ball park figure.

It seems you have the interest, which is key. Why not start regardless of the initial estimate and either fill holes with lower grades temp. and/or take a little longer to complete the set if you run outta funds. Either way you can't go wrong.

I'm attempting the same thing even though I don't have much funds. so far I have all from 1938 to 2011 in ms. wasn't too expensive, but it will start getting really expensive as I keep getting earlier dates. I say go for it but just take them one at a time. and start with easy ones.
Rest in Peace

I have been working on a similar set. I have been working backwards similar to murrellington and am only missing the 31-D back to 1930 (my pics are a bit out of date). I also have quite a few of the Philly mints from 1909 to 1929, with a few branch mints sprinkled in where I have gotten some good deals.

The 50's are easy and should be able to be filled for less than a dollar or two a coin - especially if you get a hold of some lots or a BU roll. You might be able to trade or barter some here on CCF.

The 40's get a little trickier - I think I ended up paying 2-3 dollars on average and the 42-S will probably set you back a little more than that.

The late 30's coins were probably around 5-10 dollars each; when you get to 1933, the prices go up. 1930-33 probably run $20-30 per coin. Plus the 31-S will probably run you $200 or so and 31-D is also tough. Haven't got one yet but figuring it's gonna be $100+ for that one.

Teens and 20's Philly mints aren't too bad - probably $20-30 each but the D and S mints will be quite a bit more - many running $100 or even $200 each. Semi-keys like the 22-D or 26-S even higher.

Then you have the keys - 09-S, 09-s VDB, and 14-D. Those will be in the 1000's.

Many people will do a BU set back to 1934 and then a circulated set back from there. But I am doing what you are doing - trying to go BU all the way back. I may not ever make it, but it's fun trying.

You will also run into the problem I have run into.. You can find plenty of unslabbed MS/RED 09's and 09 vdb's... Try finding an unslabbed 09 S VDB in BU/MS + Red... I'm starting to wonder if it's possible. You'll have no issue from present back to 1938. Prior to 1938 however, it start's to get tricky, You can find BU/AU but if you are trying to do BU/AU - MS RED.. It will take time and have a considerable cost to it. Some of the ones I've managed to find had price tags over $200. More common dates are much lower, you can pick up an 09 vdb BU - RED for $30 u.s
