I have a few unc. rolls and noticed this difference in the "WE" part where the E is closer to the neck than the other E. Also, one is much smaller than the other. Each is a 74-D and neither has a worn die. Look at the tip where the W hits the E as well. I'm having a problem getting the letters the same size in each pic.... Is this already known. Thanks.

You say that neither has a worn die but could one have a weak strike, less pressure? I am no pro, just a thought.

I didn't want to be the first to respond cause I'm not an expert at all. Does anyone else thing the top pic shows extra thickness?

Also, not an expert, but look at the vertical elements of "OD W" and the left point at the bottom of "W".

Although it might be the angle of the camera or lens distortion because the OD looks differently shaped in the two pictures.

After looking at this a little more, I'm chalking it up to the operator filing down the fields... although, I don't know why the E is so far away from the neck than the other....

Look at the distancefrom the bottom of the W to the bottom of the E. They are the same in both images. A plishing may have removed the mid devices on the motto and removed the close look the WE on the tops?

ADDED:
Here is an example: The devices on the field were polished away so only part of the devices remain.
Ike:-Spacing-On-The-74-D
The devices are tapered and when part of the field is abraded away during a polshing, then the wider devices near the field suffer. The devices will appear as above for the rest of the life of that die.

I would say the difference if from polishing of the die.
