I have been saving up some money and have been looking at these two coins. While I collect both of these types I am also looking at it as an investment, selling them 10-15 years down the road. The grade on the CC I am looking at is MS-60 to MS-64 and the Mercury dime will be around VF-XF. I know the CC only had 228,000 made but who knows how many of the Mercury dimes were made. I am hoping to get some your thoughts on this. Thanks,

I wish I had the money to make this decision!

I checked the CherryPickers' Guide and it gives the 1942/41 a URS-12 or 1001 to 2000 known and the 1942/41-D gets a URS-11 or 501 to 1000 known. PCGS Coin Facts estimates the survival on the 1885-CC at 185,150 in all grades, MS-60 or over is 166,650 and MS-65 and up at 20,800.

Hope this helps a little.

If you are looking at it as an investment so resell, you want to make sure you can find a buyer.

Error/varieties are harder to find buyers (usually) since the collector base is smaller.

You buy an MS 1885-CC Morgan, your potential buyer base just multiplied by a large margin.

I would go CC because Morgans have a strong collector base compared to a smaller collector base of special die varieities

i have a graded 42 over 41. I also have several cc morgans. But I need a 1885. I would rather have the cc and not have the merc if I could swap them magically.

The CC Morgans are in special Morgan category all their own. I also like the 1881-CC, 1890-CC, and 1891-CC in addition to the '85-CC. Can't go wrong with any one of them.

That is the problem with many error coins of value. You really have to rely on error collectors. And who knows if there will even be any tomorrow.
Today you really know how mamy of the CC's were made but what if someone pops up with several rolls of the 42/41 Merc? What if many, many thousands are found? Why even think about it if for an investment.

Thanks for all the opinions. Looks like it will be the CC Morgan. I didn't even give any thought to the 42/1 being harder to sell down the road, also like it was mentioned the Morgans are not hard to look at.

I will post a pic when I get it. There is a show coming up at the end of this month in St. Louis.

The CC dollars are very popular amongst collectors but a point that was not yet mentioned about the 42/1 Mercury dime is it is a variety not just for the error collector. The Mercury dime collector has to have one to complete his set of dimes including the varieties so there will always be a market for this particular error. Macmercury will attest that Mercury dime collectors all dream about owning/finding a 42/1, I know I did years ago when I was assembling a dime set from 1892 to 1964 in the Dansco folder.
