Hey hey hey! So I just got back from a new dealer today, and while I was there I spotted a great PCGS AG3 Mercury dime for sale for $775. I realized the price was pretty high, and after some negotiating he's offering it to me for $550. I've got the coin on hold until tomorrow and it's a beaut. I'm thinking this is a great deal, but maybe you all disagree? Please let me know what your opinions!

That's about the going rate for a slabbed AG-3. If you like it - go for it I'm thinkin...

IMO, AG-3 Mercury dimes are going for around $750. Your call, but it sounds like a reasonable deal to me.

I just saw one go for $430 AG-3 in an NGC slab today on ebay. There was another one earlier for $430 that was really dark and ugly, probably AG details that was PCGS genuine not gradeable.

I would say that it depends on the coin. AG-3s range A LOT in detail difference between weak examples and strong ones. If more than half of the lettering around the reverse rim is visible, imho that qualifies as strong nearing G-4, and I would definitely go for it.

I was just about to say what johnny54321 but he beat me to it :-) I have seen some AG's that I have graded FR2 and half the mm is missing. If it's a strong true AG3, $550 is a good price. Lets see some pics!

post pics, but I say good deal!
Plus, trust your gut -- are you still excited about the buy, or are you all filled with buyers' remorse? You sound excited, so there you go! :)

A decent deal at retail, but they rarely exceed $500 at Heritage. The sample size is large, too - conclusive - over 30 AG3 1916-D's have been sold this year alone on Heritage.
I strongly advise you and everyone else to look very closely at Heritage when contemplating a key, as opposed to retail.

In spite of what I said above, I agree with the others that say "buy what you want." If you like the look of the coin, and it's genuine, that matters more than the "official" grade. It's not like you're trying to turn around and sell it tomorrow. There are nicer "AG-3" coins out there that look better than some lifeless "G" or "VG" coins. The coin is worth how badly you want it. Also...
