Although I don't collect indians, I am collecting keys. This one is in an ICG slab, and the price was right so I went for it.   |

Looks to me from the wear on the case that it was cased a long time ago. I'd say G-6, only outlines in Liberty is visible but MAYBE VG8

I would go with VG-8. Its hard to tell from photo but it looks like at least 3 or more letters (but not all)in 'LIBERTY' are visible.

I'd say a VG10 with an outside shot at F12. LIBERTY a little weak for F12 in my book but a nice key date. Congrats! nlp

VG-10, maybe Fine 12. Very nice looking coin. Given the details in the headdress, the fact that "L" is visible and the rest of the letters' tops appear to be visible, I wouldn't be surprised if this went F12.

It may go F12. Rare in that grade whether it's Vg10 or F12 and a very nice coin. I just missed getting a 1877 on ebay recently (decent looking G4) so this coin hits home with me  |

I'll just quote Rick Snow on his opinion for F12:Quote:

All letters of LIBERTY must be partly visible,
though they need not be entirely legible. I would add that the denticles, hair, ribbon are consistent with an F12-15. And this particular year is subject to "market grading" too. |

Thanks for the input all, Indian Head cents are not my strong suit. ICG graded it VG-10, which seems to more or less be the forum consensus average. It seemed to compare favorably with PCGS and NGC VG-10s I checked on Heritage, and was definitely stronger than the VG-8s. The seller was asking $839 for it, which seems a good price, but since he had a "Best Offer" option, I through out $750---which was immediately declined. So I upped it to $775, which was immediately accepted. Also the shipping was free and I get $15+ in ebay bucks. :-D PCGS and NGC VG-10s on Heritage ranged between $900-$1100 or so. Although this one isn't in a top tier slab, the coin is what is important to me. I can see VG10, but based on overall details, I lean towards F12. Any way you grade it, I think you got a good deal.  As a comparison, I think your coin compares well to this PCGS F12--the obverse details are very similar.  |

The problem with collecting keys for me though, is now that I have the biggest key, I may be more easily convinced to try and complete a set...;-P decisions, decisions...
