Delhi Sultanate is one of the richest sources of numismatic diversity. Though Qutb ud din Aibak was the first Muslim ruler who established in India, the coins of Muhammad bin Sam are the ones considered the first Islamic coins to circulate here. Muhammad Bin Sam  Legend in circle reads "muizi" On the obverse of the next coin there is a recumbent bull to left with '(Muham)mad Sama' in Devanagari script above.Reverse shows a horseman to the right.  IltatmishLower line of legend on the left side image reads 'Dehli'  Left image is the reverse and shows a stylised horseman to the right.Above that the legend reads 'Sri Ha..deva' in Nagari script.Obverse shows a recumbent bull to left with a trident on the hip (jhula) and legend 'Sri Samsadi(na)  Left image reads full name 'Iltatmish' in Persoarabic script.On the other side, parts of horseman to the right and parts of legend 'Sri Hamira'  |

How interesting--thanks for sharing!  I especially like the first coin and the style of the script--it is very old. |

Thanks DVCollector. That first coin is my favourite too. The beauty of that 12th century script is awesome.
What astonished me most is the perfect execution of its relief which we otherwise see only a century later in Qutb ud din Mubarak coins.

Thanks EgCollector. Please keep watching. There are some coins with mysterious legends.Hope you can correct me if I go wrong.Even though I can read the Persoarabic script to an extent, I do not know meanings of any of those words. But the diversity of calligraphy makes these coins extra-ordinary. Thanks to the designers and the rulers of those times, each one of them is a numismatic wonder.

The next coin is historically a milestone.In 1290.AD,Muiz ud din fell paralyzed. Some of the nobles made his three year old son the Sultan, with the title," Shams ud din Kayumars". Hardly had he been on the throne for three months before Jalal ud din Firoz Khilji got him murdered to establish Khilji line of rule. His coins weigh 4.2gms. Coins with exactly the same legends on both obverse and reverse were issued by Shams ud din Adl shah (1356-1358.AD) of Madurai sultanate, but they weigh 3gms. Weight alone is the differentiating feature between them.  Edited by drnsreedhar

Jalalat ud din Razia (1236-40.AD)was the only lady sultana to sit on Delhi's throne.She was nominated by her father Iltamish though some nobles resented it.They plotted against her with fabricated allegations.She was alleged to have had an unholy affair with a slave and was slain ultimately.  |

Jalal ud din Firoz shah Khilji (1290-1295.AD) is the founder of the Khilji dynasty. Copper - 1½ Gani(4.5gms)  Billon - 1½ Gani (4.1gms)
