I am very new to coin collecting, and even newer to this forum (first post...).

I will try to get a picture up tonight, but for now just wanted to ask for help. I found a North Carolina State Quarter that has what looks like a shadowed image on the entirety of the face (forehead to chin) on the obverse. Under a simple mag. glass I did not find errors on the rest of the coin. The 'shelf' or 'shadow' is definately raised, and is probably 1/2 mm out from the normal edge of Washington's face.
I just bought a black book and found that there are many COMMON, uncollectable errors. I am assuming that is is just a planchet slip of some sort, but help would be much appreciated. I will get a picture up asap.

it could be double struck, double die (even though I have never heard of a NC dd being found), or it could be just Mechanical Doubling. Is there a way you can take a picture of the coin to show the details of what you are looking at? If so we would be able to tell you which one it is

Any chance you could scan the image bigger? Set the scanner on 300 DPI if you can.

even though the image is small I can see what looks like doubling coming from the forehead down through the nose but really need a bigger picture to see what kind of doubling it is

N-Carolina-.25-Common-Die-Slip-Or-Not?

Sorry about that... I have not scanned a coin before and was so set on keeping the size under 90k. If you have other suggestions on how to make it clearer let me know. I will try again tomorrow also.

I gotta say, it looks as either a double die (which I really doubt) or a coin that was double struck (which is what it looks like) I think I can rule out Mechanical Doubling because of the spread is so far away but metalman would be the one to wait for an answer from on this one. I would say its a pretty good find either way

Whatever it turns out to be, it's pretty cool.

Thanks again for the help. There has not been a response to this for awhile and I was wondering if that meant that it is definately double struck or if I should seek further help. My problem is that I do not know where the best place is to go for that help. If it looks like a definite double strike, I will be content with that, but want to know what that means collectibility-wise.

Happy hunting all, and thanks!

not sure what to think about this one, in my opinion it is double struck, but I would have thought all the "error collectors" would have already chimed in and gave their opinions as well and not sure why they haven't. Maybe since its back up top they will see it this time and maybe throw an opinion at you because they may have been getting ready for vacation the last time and just haven't seen the thread. I can tell you me being from NC I think this is way cool and want to thank you for sharing it with us even though I am not 100% sure what caused it

I need to see good clear pics of the rest of the coin,, with only a small part of the coin to look at, it appears that the profile is all that is affected , making it Die Deterioration Doubling.

It's simple Mechanical Doubling. This is rather common and does not warrant premium value.

ok... thank you for that. I think that this was what I assumed, but I just was not certain because it was a rather uniform doubling EXCEPT for the end of the nose. Oh well; I will still keep it well tended to as I do not see errors that clear every day.
Good day all!
