Is there something I'm missing here? I just saw in the past few days several auctions on ebay for plain boxes of nickels. Nothing special just regular circulating nickels. The highest price for one that sold was over $130!! I added up the ebay and paypal fees and though the seller managed to make 3 or 4 dollars off the sale, he actually likely lost money on the majority of the boxes he put up for sale despite the fact that several of the lower selling ones sold for $120. What utter nonsense. I think I'm gonna list one with a starting price of $125 with 7 shipping. The ended auction can be found here. http://cgi.ebay.com/100-00-bank-box...em27bcd994e4Thanks, -XoG

But you can just withdraw them from the bank for $100, there's no need to buy them on ebay for 30% premiums lol

It's a minimum of 11.00 to ship a box. I've shipped many. Curious he shows it holed side down and all taped-up.

I could see paying a small premium for getting boxes from the opposite coast... But if you're using nickels as bullion, why not get them from your own bank?

With copper cents and nickels worth more than face, and with coppers selling fairly well on ebay you would think there would be a market for nickels too since they are over face as well. It seems like I never seen nickel sales on ebay.

maybe those people don't know that you can get boxes for face value at the bank? but yeah that looks ridiculous. I was like maybe I can sell some too, but after fees and shipping there is no room for profit... I don't get it either.

If it's taped he probably searched them and just rerolled and filled the box with skunks. Besides, copper? Correct me if I'm wrong but 90% of the nickel is NICKEL, that's why it's called a nickel!
Some people...

Quote: why not get them from your own bank I can only assume because people are ignorant and don't realize they can buy these for face. It seems like I never seen nickel sales on ebay. No you wouldn't since, again, you can easily buy them for face. Pre-zincolns still require some amount of work to separate from zincolns so I can see why there's a market there. Nickels, even with a melt value over face, are available in nearly unlimited quantities for face value and there are no serious signs that the composition will change in the near future. I bet I could buy $1000 worth of nickels for face on my way home from work if I stopped at 4 or 5 banks. I can only guess the ebay buyers are ignorant or involved in some elaborate feedback scam (doubtful).

For the same reason that 1 ounce (US) of 90% copper coins sells for well over 1 ounce (troy) of .99999 silver on ebay: People have no idea what they are doing.

On the other hand could be fishing for repeat customers. Last summer my son sold at face + shipping (small loss) but later supplied the keys, semis that were lacking.

I don't care what "theory" coin-flation states. Alex over there sure started a fad. That fad will take in a lot of suckers before it's over. Take some cupro-nickel foreign coins, or Canadian nickels to a scrap yard. Then come back and we will talk theory and reality.
