I recently acquired a couple of exceptional coins 'out of the rough' at an estate sale, and thought they might be worth showing here, to gain some insight as to what I have from the esteemed and experienced members of this site.
First, allow me to explain that I have only recently plunged back into the coin hobby, after a fifty-year hiatus. Things were waaaay different back then- there was no, or very limited, TPG, and as a teenager the only things I could afford to collect were what I could pull from circulation.
That meant the only SLQ's I was able to find were invariably well worn. So when this one showed up at auction, my hand stayed up!
The coin in question was previously shown in Moe's 'Days Of' thread, but the pics were poor. These are the best I can do with the camera I have, and the lighting conditions.
So kindly let me know what you think.
I had never come across the SLQ 'full head' concept before joining this site. And I never imagined I would have an opportunity to own a coin that might qualify for that prestigious designation.
Have a look. If you owned this coin, would you have it sent out to a TPG? And if so, which one?
I'll post the Mercury dime that came along with this coin in another topic. Thanks for your input; enjoy the pics, and best of luck in your hunts.

Beautiful coin with a terrific strike! I would guess MS-64 FH. A few minor spots and slightly muted luster could hold it back from Gem imho.

I've been in the market for one of these so I've looked at a lot; they're pricey in this condition. At least MS-63 FH, probably higher.

She's a beauty! Nice hair and full shield detail! Definitely a keeper! I would like to acquire her sister for my 7070.

That is a beauty, for sure - I agree with the MS-64 FH. Congrats!

Thanks, all. I'm appreciative of your appreciation, since I am pretty much a total n00b when it comes to buying high grade USA coins.
Still unanswered: Should I just plunk in into a 7070 when I eventually pick one up, or have it plasticated? I'm pretty old school, fond of being able to hold a coin in my fingers.
And there are no plans to sell it until the Fateful Day arrives. Of course in today's unpredictable world, that could be tomorrow..

I grade it about $400. Maybe $500. Does that justify the cost of grading? My thinking is MS64FH (the FH is a slam dunk; if both horizontal and vertical lines in the shield and the lines left and right of the legs are fully defined, you've got something to beat your chest about) and at Heritage they're going in that range.

In honesty, if your planning includes the Fateful Day, you should have this one slabbed. Furthermore, include collection-specific language in your will to draw attention to the potential added value of certain of your pieces; it'll incentivize your heirs to look a little further into things.

I have never investigated the cost of TPG since I never before had anything that seemed worthy.
That evaluation makes me happy, because it was a fairly expensive lot. I'll have a better idea how well I did after the Mercury dime opinions come in. I'll try to get that one on the grading forum sometime tomorrow.
