I am not sure where to begin, so will jump in feet first. My siblings and I have recently inherited a lovely old Canadian coin collection that our mother accumulated and worked on for most of her life. I've been doing research online for months looking at price guides and auctions, trying to get a sense of what her collection is all about, and what it contains as far as the value and quality of the coins. It's been quite a journey and pretty confusing mostly, with all the variations in grading, and colour, and toning, and lustre, the key dates and rare strikes, errors and mint marks. I was lost! Then today I discovered this forum and have been reading here for only a few hours, but have already learned so much. What an incredible resource. I'm so happy to be here!

Welcome, Welcome, its always nice to have a new member. I'm still relatively new myself, but I feel right at home. We're also anxious to help you out with your new coin collection. there is another sub forum here where you can post pictures of coins and we can help you grade some of them. Welcome again!

Thankyou! Many of the coins I'm interested in knowing about are nicely tucked away in their Whitman albums and I am afraid to disturb them, most have not been touched since they were put there 40 or 50 years ago. Is there a rule of thumb for handling this kind of collection? ie. wear cotton gloves, or don't touch at all?

In answer to your question Kopper Ken, the collection now belongs to five of us and we were initially interested in finding out more about its value and exploring options to sell it, so I offered to do the research. Right now still in the first phase and quite honestly I am enjoying the process and don't want to rush into making any decisions.

I think It will be awhile before I can post pictures as I need to learn how to do that too...as far as taking pictures, what kind of camera would I use? Is there a special macro lense needed? and then my first concern re how to handle the coins without disturbing the albums too much.

This is the BEST coin forum on the web, by far, in my humble opinion.

I was thinking about just taking the whole collection to a reputable appraiser, but still trying to get information on that too, meanwhile I really appreciate the vast knowledge base and expertise that I am seeing here and hope to glean as much as I can by reading the posts and hopefully asking the right questions.

for now, I wouldn't take the coins out of their folders. For starters, just take some general photos with your digital camera. Try some close ups with the coins still in the folders. Once you take some pictures, dump them into your computer. When you reply to the forum, don't use the "quick reply" box at the bottom, use the link "reply to topic". There will be a tab to click for uploading pictures, similar to what you would do if you were attaching something to an email. (There is a chance that your picure file will be to large. If that happens, there is a link for "image resizing". You will have to resize your pictures, then resave them to your computer, and then up load them. It sounds like a lot of work, but once you do it a few times, its really no big deal.)
Out of curiosity, what are the date ranges for the coins, and what denominations are they?
