NPR broke this story a few weeks back and there's been quite a number of discussions about this already. Good article though.

One point to bring up is the only reason it's causing taxpayers money is the storage. Not the minting.

Recalcitrant Americans won't give up the silly dollar bill.

I've been away for a long while and didn't realize this had already been discussed. But it seems to me its a waste minting these when they just sit in vaults. It's interesting that the guy interviewd says its now a bad idea minting these. They should have known this wouldn't work unless the dollar notes were withdrawn from circulation.

Didnt this happen with the Morgan dollars and they were sitting in vaults up into the 50's or something, that's why there are so many high grade 1921's?

Maybe 100 years from now the GSA will slab these and sell them, just like they did Morgans

yeah but the difference between these and Morgans is these have no bullion value at all. When the GSA slabbed the Morgans they were marketed as Silver coins and that is why they were such a hit because even then no one really cared for the Morgans or Peace dollars but they were silver so they were always worth their silver content. With these President Dollars they will probably never catch on because they are just worthless trinkets with no value except for the number on the face of the coin
Rest in Peace

Bryan1315, You hit the nail on the head! The Presidential dollars value are worth only the value on the face. They are valuable to learn about the Presidents and their history. I'm not in favor of how the Mint is trying to use them, but I like the historical significance. As a retired Middle School teacher, show a coin with a face and talk about it, the History lesson and learning starts there.
Bryan, your Dansco7070 is amazing.
Thanks Brian.
