Ok, so like I don't have enough to do this weekend, I went to my bank branch at lunch and picked up my first box of cents. Like the typical geek I will probably keep track/tally of what I find, separate the copper, wheaties, and other fun stuff.

Anyone have a guess as to what percentage of copper I'll find? Wheaties?

Is it sad that I'm excited about sifting through 15 pounds of cents?

Okay, I'll guess.... I say you find 20% copper, and you get lucky and find 5 wheaties!

Have fun with it. Have you thought about a system? When I search nickels, I like to sort by decade, then go back and sort by year. It's such a sad feeling finishing a box of coins.

I'm betting you'll score about 22% coppers, and about 1% wheats. Most of your coins will be "D" Denver coins. Should be about 9 Denver coins to one Philly.

Some of the coins will be absolutely filthy - be sure to wear a pair of white surgical gloves while sorting. If you decide to go without the gloves, definately don't pick your nose, stick fingers in mouth, or scratch around your eyes ! I got very sick once when I did not heed this advice...

As far as feeling strange about sorting Lincoln cents. You are now part of an elite fraternity!

I'll guess 18% copper, 7 wheats and 3 foreign - probably Canadian.

Im going a little higher 26 percent copper, No wheats and 3 Canada.
Ohh yea and something that looks like a penny but your just not sure. 1 in every box.
I highly recommend taking LastGold's advise WEAR GLOVES or at least finger cots. I know I've seen them in a few acts that would make Hazmat suite more appropriate. They taste like that for a reason. I think what your doing is great, make sure to post some pics.

My wheat averages are good, from a certain bank.

SO I guess: 24% copper, 15 wheats.

Will do!

I was also just doing a bit of thinking. Normally 2,500 of anything would be a great sample size and fairly representative of just about anything you might be trying to analyze. But with all the trillions of cents minted in the past 100+ years, I'm not so sure it is.

On the other hand, many of the older ones are out of circulation and quite difficult to find (backed up by your 0-15 wheaties/2500 cents guesses), so perhaps this is indeed a fine sample size. I suppose the estimates of 17-26% copper are too. We'll see!

LastGold - why do you say there will be far more D than P?

I've noticed a decrease in wheats just in the last 6 months. I was pulling on average about 11 wheats a box. now my average per box is like 4. thats just from january to now.

Cents do not circulate much. That means that coins on the East coast are mostly from Philadelphia. West coast states get mostly Denver coins. You are on the edge of the Denver coin region (I believe), because someone else from Texas reported that he got mostly Denver coins ...

If I am wrong let me know...

On a different note, I have found through the years, that "beginners luck" seems to have some validity. So I'm guessing you will probably find something unusual (maybe a blank planchet, or even a key date)

Keep us posted!

Well...

As it turns out, I am the proud owner of 2,500 brand spankin' new 2011 shield cents. And yes, LastGold, they're D's.

* sigh *
